Job Description 

You will work alongside our directors throughout 2024/5 to:

• Design the onboarding and offboarding process for staff and volunteers.

• Roll out and optimize the above.

• Manage recruitment of team members, including being at interviews and making decisions on who to bring on board.

• Build and manage the HR team, including staff and volunteer managers.

• Create and implement dispute resolution processes and policies.

• Develop and manage processes and policies to make working and volunteering with us a seamless, enjoyable and supportive experience for all. 

• Be a point of contact for staff and volunteers. 

Note: This role has been designed for a year to support in building and managing our HR systems and process but we would love to have you longer if it works for us both.

Job Description

Volunteer monitoring work with the IMB gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives. You will listen to prisoners and people in immigration detention, talk to staff and see for yourself what is actually happening behind the walls.

The IMB is recruiting for new members at numerous prisons and at immigration detention centres across England and Wales, and at short term holding facilities across the UK.  We are looking for people who live within one hour of their closest establishment and can commit the time to make 2 to 3 visits per month, although this may be higher during the first year of training and this can be flexible depending on the needs of the Board and the individual. We’re a group of ordinary members of the public, doing an extraordinary job. As a passionate, personable individual, you could join us in making a difference. In this unpaid role, you’ll volunteer your talent and time towards securing a decent day-to-day life for every prisoner and detainee. Under the guidance of dedicated mentors and an extensive training programme, you’ll commit to a flexible schedule of visits to a local establishment each month.  Although this is an unpaid role, we pay travel and subsistence expenses, childcare or carer costs and, in certain circumstances, contributions towards loss of earnings.  Your observations will have an impact as your Board reports its findings to Ministers in His Majesty’s Government. 

About the role

With unrestricted access to these unique environments, you’ll gain a rare insight into all aspects of life in custody. Impartial and highly influential, you can decide what shape your visits should take. As an independent monitor, you may spend time in a specific part of the establishment and choose to have your conversations with prisoners or detainees out of sight or hearing of a member of staff. As well as keeping a close eye on daily operations, you’ll play a crucial role in dealing with problems that arise. This could be in response to a confidential request to see a member of the IMB, or to observe the management of the more serious incidents that occur.

We are recruiting for a Childrens Support Volunteer to provide supervision for approximately 1-4 children of varying ages during our monthly co-production meetings at Head Office. Parents and staff will be just next door for support if this is needed at any time. As we will have more than 2 volunteers supporting and only 2 are needed to help during these sessions, you will be taking turns with the other volunteers to support each month.

Your support will have a massive impact and enable clients to feed into the service we provide and make sure their voice is heard!

• The team looks at what issues would be best to tackle for a particular month
• It considers multiple factors: Recent developments impacting charitable causes, public and media attention, upcoming parliamentary debates and more

• We then reach out to charities and social enterprises to work with us
• They suggest improvements, and propose actions to support their work
• We prepare all these materials to be presented in accessible and engaging ways on the app

We are seeking an experienced senior fundraiser manager to join our team and lead in the development and delivery of our new fundraising strategy.

This is a new role where you would be instrumental in increasing our supporter base to provide us with an income to grow. 

The ideal person would bring leadership and management experience and have a track record in strategy development, budgets, working to target and KPIs.

Working independently you would:

• Action a fundraising strategy approved by the chief executive & senior leadership team.
• Agree a departmental budget and work to achieve or exceed a fundraising target.
• Co-ordinate and manage fundraising, comprising community, trust, corporate, major donor and digital fundraising, across the organisation.
• Motivate a team of volunteers who engage in fundraising activities
• Build relationships with charitable trusts, foundations and other institutional funders.
• Lead funding applications with regards to charitable trusts, foundations, grants & competitions.
• Develop a strategy to attract corporate partners/sponsors.
• Prepare reports and give presentations on fundraising progress to the senior leadership team and the trustee board.

What are we looking for?

• Excellent written and oral presentation skills: Head of fundraising needs to make regular presentations to trustees, senior managers or potential donors/sponsors and write winning fundraising applications.
• Networking/Relationship Management skills: Head of fundraising will be called upon to represent the organisation to corporates & donors and persuade them that their cause is one they should contribute to.
• Effective project management skills: Ability to lead and co-ordinate fundraising initiatives with the support of volunteers.
• Digital skills: The organisation is centred around mobile/online technology and the Head of fundraising will need to be adept at using these technologies and be aware of their fundraising potential.
• Innovation skills: Strong ideas about how to hit fundraising targets in this climate. 
• Budget management skills: You need to be able to work effectively with limited resources.

Essential experience

• Proven track record in developing and delivering fundraising strategies
• Knowledge of good fundraising procedures for the voluntary sector

MHA The Wilderness is a 7 acre heritage garden attached to MHA Hall Grange Care home in Croydon, London. The garden has been recently reclaimed and conserved. Our aim is to make it a peaceful haven for MHA Hall Grange residents, visitors, staff and local communities. As a Volunteer Gardener you will help our Head Gardener and other volunteers with the general upkeep of The Wilderness. 

Main activities:

• You’ll be working with a small friendly team throughout The Wilderness garden to help with the general upkeep.
• You’ll do tasks such as; watering, weeding, stimming, cutting and propagating
• You’ll keep the grounds accessible for all with ongoing maintenance and clear areas for access throughout the seasons
• You’ll be familiar with and to adhere MHA’s Health and Safety Policies and policies relating to your volunteering role.

About the Role

We are looking for a Volunteer to assist in the running of the daily programme of activities at Headway East London. The Day Service is a new opportunity for people living with brain injury in the East London area to join our community. 

Volunteering with us, you’ll get involved in the fun and creative activities going on at our Day Service. Every week is different: you could help in our art studio, assist in the kitchen or take part in a music session. You’ll be supporting our members one-to-one and in groups. You don’t need any special skills or knowledge, we’ll give you the induction you need, and support is always on hand, with regular volunteer meetings, training sessions and supervision.

Main Duties

• To help Headway staff manage the activity programme for each member by offering one-to-one support or in small groups.
• To assist members with specific activities that prove challenging for them i.e., using computers, cooking, engaging in art activities.
• To initiate discussion, games or activities and encourage members to take part.
• To help floor staff around lunch time (food preps. setting up tables, dishing out and serving food).
• To assist with keeping the Headway centre safe, clean, and tidy all times by taking on tasks such as collecting and washing cups, tidying up resources' shelves, wiping tables before lunch etc…
• To inform floor staff about activities undertaken with members and any significant changes in mood or behaviour. To take members to social events and outings and being able to assist individuals needing to use a wheelchair.
• To undergo training as required and attend volunteer debriefs and supervision. To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required.

Person Specification

• Aged 18 or over.
• Experience working with people clear and sensitive communication.
• Ability to relate well to people on a one-to-one basis and be sympathetic to others’ situations.
• Willing to participate in a variety of activities appropriate for our members.
• Prepared to lead an activity with a small group of members.

Commitment

The role requires a minimum commitment of at least 4 months,anyday from Monday to Friday between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Volunteers need to sign a volunteer agreement and confidentiality form.

Training/Support

Each volunteer is given an induction which includes information on health & safety, fire precautions, confidentiality, equal opportunities, and a brief outline of the long-term effects of head injury.

As part of this role, you will receive ongoing support and you will have the opportunity to gain experience in Health and Social Care.

• To fully support our volunteers in their role we provide: regular volunteer meetings.
• Training sessions delivered by our specialist staff a regular debrief session.
• One to one supervision starting after the first 4 months and yearly appraisal meetings.

Your role will be assisting the recruitment administrator in onboarding volunteer Mentors. 

This will include checking their references, (via email), applying for DBS checks and assisting with distributions of training materials.

There may also be occasional tasks from other departments. We are a small team and jump in to help each other where possible.

What are we looking for?

• 3+ years experience within an administration role or similar. 
• previous experience using excel and applying for DBS checks would be a bonus.
