Overview

The Choir with No Name runs choirs and builds joyful singing communities with homeless and marginalised people, around the UK. Currently, there are six choirs: in Birmingham, Liverpool, London, Coventry, Brighton (run in partnership with BHT Sussex) and Cardiff (run in partnership with The Wallich). We were founded on the premise that singing makes you feel good; it distracts you from all the nonsense in life and helps you to build confidence, skills and genuine, long-lasting friendships. Our choir members are people who have experienced homelessness, or who are simply going through a tough time in their lives.

We have recently received funding from the National Lottery to build our participation programme to support choir members and people from the wider community work together to create safe, accessible and inclusive choir communities, as well as contribute to the national direction of the Choir with No Name. We are looking for someone to take on this exciting new role to lead the development of our participation programme at a national level as our Community Participation Manager. This role will work with our six current choirs and build a foundation for all future choirs.

As an organisation, we are committed to moving towards greater co-creation of choirs with people with experience of homelessness. This role is a crucial part of this journey.

Participation framework

• Carry out a skills audit across all our choirs to understand what skills are needed to run each choir with greater involvement from choir members, facilitated by choir managers. This will include discovering what skills choirs have amongst their existing member and volunteer communities, and what support and training could be shared.
• Research other organisations’ participation frameworks and volunteer programmes to identify ways in which the Choir with No Name can learn from others in the sector.
• Identify a range of tasks, roles, and responsibilities (being clear about the distinction between the these) that members and people in the community can take part in to support the running of the choir, along with the training they would need to do so.
• Identify healthy ways to step down from roles and responsibilities.
• Design and pilot a framework of roles, responsibilities and tasks, and associated training and support, before rolling out nationally across all our choirs.

Existing volunteer programme

• Evaluate our existing volunteering programme, listening to our volunteer team about their experience as a volunteer, identifying areas for development.
• Develop the existing volunteer programme to support and value volunteers and to incorporate our new approach to co-creation and co-production.
• Work with our existing volunteers in a transition from the current programme into the participation framework, whilst continuing communicating the value and importance of volunteers within the Choir with No Name.

Manage volunteer communications

• Develop and manage accessible communications to ensure volunteers are equipped with the tools they need to do their roles (training, policies, support) and feel valued (thanks and recognition for their hard work). This could include:
  • A regular email to volunteers
  •  An online portal for volunteers to access whenever they need
  • Regular meetings for volunteers to keep them up to date with what is going on in the organisation and to share practice

Volunteer recruitment, induction, training and data

• Lead on national volunteer recruitment and support local recruitment carried out by Choir Managers.
• Develop, with choir members and volunteers, a training programme to support roles within choir. This training should come in a range of forms, and where possible, led or informed by choir members.
• Manage volunteer data, including developing our data management system (currently Monday, but we are considering using Plinth), ensuring:
  • Inductions are completed consistently and reviewed for long term volunteers.
  • Training is implemented and kept up to date.
  • Volunteer data is managed in a central database so we can effectively communicate, track and understand our impact.
  • Reporting on volunteer numbers and other information is provided to the Senior Management Team and board.

Other

• Support the development of the Board Experience Programme and the Member Advisory Panel, led by the CEO and Head of Programmes.
• Work towards the Investing in Volunteers or Kings Award for Voluntary Service.
• Carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by the Choir with No Name within the scope of the role.

Purpose of the Senior Corporate Fundraising Officer role:   

As Senior Corporate Fundraising Officer, the successful candidate will play an integral role in the implementation and maintenance of a rolling programme of prospect identification, research and the nurturing of relationships. Leading on maximising support through the corporate fundraising streams, the post holder will draft and submit applications among other approaches to prospective funders and donors. In addition to developing persuasive cases for support in line with organisational priorities, the post holder will ensure that the activities for which funds are sought are impactful, measurable and can be effectively reported on to funders. Understanding Women’s Aid work, business plans and strategic priorities will be essential, as well as an involvement in fundraising events with the purpose of relationship building, nure and networking.

Key duties and responsibilities of the Senior Corporate Fundraising Officer: 

• Line managing one team member 

• To be responsible for a portfolio of prospective and existing corporate supporters to solicit large donations, funding and ensure meaningful partnerships are created 

• Work to match funders aims with Women’s Aid’s vision, purpose and mission – using creativity and innovation to package up relevant areas of Women’s Aid work and strategy to be appealing to funders

As Crisis’ Senior Media Officer, you will play a key role in delivering stand-out media campaigns that inspire the public and politicians to join our fight to end homelessness by raising awareness of our influencing campaigns and fundraising events. You will help to build Crisis’ profile by bringing to life our work, demonstrating how we end people’s homelessness for good through education, training and support with housing, employment, and health.

About you 
To be successful in this role you will have: 

• Experience of working within a busy press office environment/ PR agency or as a journalist   

• Proven experience of leading on high-profile audience focused media strategies or pitching stories which secure coverage across news, consumer, online and regional media. 

• Proven experience of managing and maintaining good relationships with internal and external stakeholders including journalists at all levels.   

• Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft copy for a range of audiences, including political, consumer, tabloid, trade and everything in between. 

• Excellent news sense, with a strong working knowledge of the UK media and ability to develop relationships with key media contacts.   

• Experience of working with case studies, identifying, and preparing them for speaking to the media and empowering people to share their experiences.

About the role 

As Senior Campaigns and Public Affairs officer, you will be responsible for the shaping Crisis’ political influencing strategies for our national campaigns.

Through our research of what works both in the UK and internationally, and our work supporting thousands of people who are homeless or at risk each year, Crisis has developed the solutions needed from Westminster Government to reverse the rising levels of homelessness and we campaign to secure the policy changes needed. With the right political will and leadership, homelessness can be ended.

This role will oversee design and delivery of creative public affairs tactics that will inspire politicians to support our campaigns. This includes overseeing our work to provide the secretariat for the APPG for Ending Homelessness, managing our monitoring and stakeholder relationships and proactively identifying local and regional influencing opportunities.

The role sits within the Campaigns Team in the Policy and Social Change directorate, but you’ll collaborate with a wide range of teams across the organisation to identify influencing opportunities, ensure our campaigns and public affairs activity have maximum reach and ensure people with lived experience are at the heart of our political influencing activity.

About you 

You will have significant experience of working with politicians in Parliament or Government and will have experience of designing and delivering political influencing strategies to secure policy change.  To be successful in this role you will have solid understanding of Parliamentary process and have worked on a range of tactics to raise the profile of issues in Parliament, with excellent political judgement and intuition.

Effective communication and ability to manage a range of internal and external stakeholders will be vital in this role in order to work collaboratively to further our campaigning objectives. You will have good ability to understand policy solutions and how best to communicate them to a range of audiences. Line management experience is desirable, but more crucially you will have experience of motivating teams or individuals to deliver results.

Understanding or knowledge of homelessness or housing policy is desirable. You may have experience in; public affairs, policy, communications and public relations.

What the job involves

We’re looking for a Senior Black Health Equity Engagement Officer to join us in a newly created role in our Black Health Equity Team alongside a Black Health Equity Engagement Officer.

The team will support our community engagement function to build trust and engagement with Black community organisations and leaders across the UK. The purpose being to increase the awareness in Black communities of the risk of prostate cancer and to narrow the health inequalities faced by Black men.

As a Senior Black Health Equity Engagement Officer, you'll be responsible for managing the operational aspects of our charity's Black Men's Health Advisory Group. This includes scheduling meetings, planning agendas, and ensuring effective communication within the group to gather insights, support, and guidance. You'll actively engage with various groups, organisations, and networks within Black communities, building trusting relationships to spread awareness of prostate cancer. Additionally, you’ll also identify and establish ways to build strategic relationships with grassroots organisations who are best placed to deliver work and increase its impact.

You’ll help to build an understanding and knowledge of ways in which health inequalities impact Black men affected by prostate cancer (including their families) and be able to provide expert advice and partner with teams across the charity to help to tackle health inequalities.

You'll develop work plans, measure impact, and ensure that the lived experiences of Black communities shape our work. Additionally, you'll work with colleagues to increase our number of Black volunteers to help make a bigger difference in communities.

What we want from you

We’re looking for candidates who understand health inequalities and are able to explain how they may impact Black men affected by prostate cancer. Knowledge of, or previous involvement in health awareness initiatives would be beneficial for this role, although we also value transferable skills gained from other sectors.

You’ll have experience in organising meetings or events that cater to a diverse range of participants, ensuring that various perspectives are heard and valued, especially within Black communities. You’ll ensure their lived experiences shapes any proposed solutions.

You’ll be an excellent communicator and comfortable presenting to a wide range of audiences and show credibility to those at senior levels and external stakeholders and partners. You’ll also be able to work will with a mix of teams and work together to develop and coordinate plans to benefit Black communities and raising awareness.

Please note that community events often take place on evenings or weekends – the successful candidate will need to work flexibly to attend c. one weekend event a month and take time back mid-week.

This role is being part-funded by Movember as part of Prostate Cancer UK’s Black Health Equity Programme.

Context and Background

The Policy and Public Affairs (PAPA) team is part of the Strategy and Knowledge Directorate at the NSPCC. The Directorate exists to help shape the world around us - and what the NSPCC does - so that it reflects what we have learned and can help keep children safe from abuse.

The PAPA team works across the four nations of the UK to influence legislation, policy and practice to ensure they are as effective as possible in keeping children safe. We focus on policy priorities through our five core workstreams: the child protection system and children's social care; early years and health; child sexual abuse; online safety; and young victims and witnesses.

We are recruiting a Senior Policy Research Officer to develop and deliver our early years and health policy work to deliver real change and reform in the best interests of children.

The post holder will work in the UK/England part of the Policy and Affairs Team focussed on influencing the Westminster Government. The role involves a variety of responsibilities including policy research, policy development and public affairs. This is a great opportunity to drive policy work in an exciting policy area, by building a strong evidence base and contributing to effective influencing strategies.

Job purpose

The Senior Policy Research Officer will be responsible for undertaking policy research to achieve the NSPCC's strategic goals, using their skills and experience to strengthen the NSPCC's impact on public policy relating to the early years and health. Main duties and responsibilities

· Develop and maintain a high level of expertise on priority policy areas, with lead responsibility for early years and health policy.

· Scope, develop and refine NSPCC policies on priority policy issues, putting forward the economic case for change where possible.

· Analyse a wide range of primary and secondary sources of evidence (such as official data sets and statistics, policy documents, academic literature, economic analyses, FOls and survey data) to develop innovative and evidence-based policy solutions to complex problems.

· Prepare high-quality policy outputs such as briefings, summaries, consultation responses, papers and presentations for internal and external audiences.

· Contribute to the delivery of our research activity, working with teams across NSPCC to assess policy and evidence needs, then design and undertake impactful research projects to address these.

· Contribute to the commissioning of methodologically robust and ethically sound research to investigate a substantial child protection challenge, including by devising clearly defined requirements for the work.

· Manage policy research projects from development and commissioning stage through to completion, providing direction and supervision to ensure the highest standards of delivery.

· Develop and maintain a network of key contacts across parliament, the civil service, and civil society, using this network to amplify the NSPCC's voice and take advantage of opportunities to influence policy making.

· Represent the NSPCC on relevant internal and external advisory groups, meetings, and stakeholder events.

· Act as media spokesperson for the NSPCC on relevant subject areas, including live and pre-recorded interviews as well as background discussions with journalists on policy relating to early years and health.

Person specification

1) Strong support for the NSPCC's mission and values.

2) Good understanding of child protection, early years, health or related public policy areas combined with knowledge of the wider legal, government and media context.

3) Excellent policy development skills, with the ability to develop and refine policy solutions to complex problems.

4) Proven ability to undertake research (qualitative and/ or quantitative) and analyse findings, with an ability to design methodologically robust and ethically sound research that is delivered to a high standard and agreed timescales.

5) Experience of successfully presenting research accurately to make a clear and compelling case for policy and legislative change.

6) Excellent communication skills including a clear and concise writing style, combined with good oral presentation skills, that can be tailored to a variety of audiences.

8) Ability to work on own initiative with strong organisational and project management skills, including demonstrable experience of project managing small research projects, working at speed and under pressure when required, while successfully managing project progress, risks and quality.
