Help us keep the nation safe by removing foreign offenders from the UK.
When you join the Home Office, you can be sure of an exceptional career opportunity in which you will have access to the type of challenges that other organisations simply cannot match. This is particularly true of the Foreign National Offender Removal Command (FNORC) who keep the population safe by deporting foreign nationals who have committed serious criminal offences. As soon as these individuals come to our attention – and regardless of whether they are currently in prison or free to mingle with the community – our team work to progress these cases as quickly as possible, so that offenders can be deported from the UK. And it is here that we need your input.
Working a minimum of 30 hours per week (as this role is open on both a full-time and part-time basis) you will see to it that we are providing a high-quality service. Leading a team of up to 10 Executive Officers, you will allocate and monitor the cases they are working on, seeing to it that each detention and deportation case is progressing as it should. This will include identifying and resolving blockages to deportations, including responding to litigation and complying with recommendations that have been made at case progression panels. Crucially, you will also made immediate, evidence-based decisions about whether cases should enter the detention estate, so you will ensure every case is handled fairly, and that the special needs and vulnerabilities of each person have been taken into consideration.
We want to ensure that those guilty of serious offences are removed from the UK at the earliest possibility within the Early Removal Scheme, so you will be encouraged to share your ideas on how we can improve our processes. You will also ensure we have an ongoing pipeline of talent by developing the skills and knowledge of your team, and you will ensure they are benefitting from a supportive working environment in which they feel able to discuss their own methods and ideas.
This is a highly varied and deeply interesting role in which you will make a tangible difference to the safety and security of the nation. You will also have the opportunity to build your own professional network, as you will work collaborate with a wide range of partners including The Police, The Crown Prosecution Service, HM Prison and Probation, and HM Courts & Tribunals Service. To be equal to the challenge, you will therefore have exceptional interpersonal skills, particularly as you will be required to brief Ministers and other senior officials. As a natural leader who can get the best out of a team, you will have good stakeholder engagement and management capabilities, so it goes without saying that you will have strong verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable working at pace in order to meet tight deadlines without ever lowering standards, it would be ideal if you have previous line management experience. About Us
We are National Energy Action (NEA) – and our vision is to end fuel poverty; our work to improve and promote energy efficiency brings social, environmental, housing and employment benefits. We believe everyone should be able to afford to keep their homes warm and safe, however, low incomes, high energy bills and poor energy efficiency currently deny this to millions of households across the UK. Never has this been more important than today.
NEA’s teams are friendly, knowledgeable and are dedicated to what we do. We are proud of our expertise and proud of the service we deliver to our clients.
We offer colleagues a friendly, rewarding workplace and the chance to build a worthwhile career with a not-for-profit organisation that is proud to make a genuine difference to people’s lives each and every day.
The Role
We have a fantastic opportunity for someone to join us in the position of Energy Adviser, to work on either a full or part time basis. Job share applications are also welcome. This role provides an exciting and rewarding opportunity to help the charity build its profile amongst regional stakeholders whilst delivering projects that seek to bring an end to fuel poverty and to the misery of cold homes that is experienced by over 6.5 million households in the UK.
NEA’s Energy Advisers are empathetic, polite and have good listening skills but are also knowledgeable, assertive, and confident. Their main role is to provide one to one advice to clients referred through the charity’s Warm and Safe Homes helpline and to deliver energy advice presentations to groups. They also get involved in a range of tasks to support these activities. Energy Advisers sit within the Communities Directorate and are part of a dynamic and caring team of professionals who go the extra mile to support their clients, some of whom may be in difficult circumstances.
This post is subject to enhanced vetting and barring check.
What you will need to succeed
Working within our Communities Directorate you will have demonstrable experience of delivering Energy Advice and helping others. Therefore, it is vital that you have empathy, confidence and knowledge of the issues facing vulnerable low-income households.
You will have knowledge and understanding of the environmental, social and economic problems of deprived areas and the roles of the public, private and voluntary sectors in tackling them.
You will also have knowledge of assistance available for energy efficiency improvements to low-income households.
You will be an excellent communicator, with proven experience and understanding of how to effectively address the energy needs of low income, vulnerable or disadvantaged householders - with the desire to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

Are you looking for a new challenge? Are you keen to work with children to support and develop their phonics and reading skills?
38% of children from disadvantaged backgrounds leave primary school in England each year unable to read to the expected standard. Chapter One is a fast-growing charity, with a vision of a world in which all children have the literacy skills they need to thrive. We work to ensure that all children have 1:1 reading support at the time they need it most.
Our Early Literacy Intervention (ELI) programme (based on a model that serves 20,000 children successfully in the USA) provides daily, 1:1, 7 minute phonics sessions for children who are behind in phonics. Using a bespoke technology tool, a trained Early Literacy Interventionist works individually with target children.
We are seeking a part-time Early Literacy Interventionist (ELI), based at Galleywall Primary School in Southwark, South London. This ELI role, reporting to the Schools Development Manager, is a great opportunity for someone who wants to develop and grow their knowledge of phonics and/or their teaching skill set. It is ideal for someone with previous school experience who is looking for a new and exciting challenge.
For your caseload of target children, you will conduct an initial baseline assessment and then deliver differentiated, 1:1, targeted, 7 minute phonics sessions to pupils using a systematic, synthetic approach. Although you are employed by Chapter One, you will work closely with the school team to understand the progression of the school’s phonics teaching; establish tailored plans for each child and feedback on pupil progress. Using your knowledge and insight, you will also collaborate with colleagues at Chapter One to further improve the ELI model, the online tool and programme delivery.
Please read the full job description for details of the responsibilities of the role, and our employee recruitment pack to learn more about Chapter One.
Chapter One is committed to safeguarding children and young people. All postholders are subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service disclosure. Copies of our Safeguarding Policy and Safer Recruitment Policy are available on request.
Chapter One is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value and celebrate diversity in backgrounds and experience and are deliberate about the kind of teams we are building. Literacy is a universal concern, and we need people from all backgrounds to maximise our innovation, creativity and impact. We especially welcome applications from persons who have experienced disadvantage and/or from those who are from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities who are currently underrepresented in the organisation.
Please apply via Charity Jobs by sending a CV and covering letter (of no more than one page) outlining why you’re the right person for this role and how you meet the Required skills & experience section of the job description.
Closing date for applications: Sunday 14th April at 11.59pm
