Alder Hey is one of the pioneering centres for children's health and the busiest children's hospital in the UK. Its vision is to be recognised as one of the leading children's healthcare providers in the world by 2020. To help achieve this vision the new Alder Hey in the Park hospital opened in October 2015 supported by £25 million raised by Alder Hey Children's Charity. 

Alder Hey Children's Charity is seeking to appoint a Trusts, Foundations and Research Officer to join our dynamic Charity team on a one year fixed term contract.

Trusts, Foundations and Major Gifts play a crucial role in supporting Alder Hey, and currently contribute around £2.5m to Alder Hey Children’s Charity annually. The successful candidate will work with the team to identify new prospects, as well as managing a portfolio of both new and existing Trusts and Foundations.

You will be able to write high-quality, detailed and targeted proposals and applications to new and existing trusts and foundations, using persuasive and impactful language to develop a powerful case for support. You will have the tact, diplomacy and communication skills to build and manage great relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. The donations you secure will help to improve the lives of the children in our care. The role will be based at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

AIMS:

The key aims of this post are:

  • To support the Trusts and Foundations Partnerships Manager and Director of Philanthropy to manage and grow income from charitable trusts and foundations and major donors.

  • To co-ordinate a rolling programme of applications, updates and reports with small to medium sized Trusts and Foundations against an agreed work plan.

  • To develop and carry out a regular programme of prospect research into new trusts and foundations and high net-worth individuals, using prospect lists and databases.

  • To raise an annually agreed personal target to contribute towards the overall Trusts and Foundations and Major Giving annual target

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Successfully and professionally managing a portfolio of existing and prospective trusts and through tailored written correspondence, timely reporting, telephone contact and face to face meetings

  • Writing high-quality, detailed and targetedproposals and applications to new and existing trusts and foundations, using strong cases for support

  • Conducting excellent account management, meeting donors needs as required, fostering long-term positive relationships.

  • Working effectively with charity and hospital staff and internal stakeholders to identify new funding opportunities and secure timely updates for reporting purposes

  • Working with Alder Hey Children’s Charity’s Marketing Manager to develop timely and engaging reports, case studies and other media pieces to feed back to current and prospective donors

  • Researching individual Trusts and Foundations and High Net-Worth Individuals to determine their suitability as new prospects in relation to Alder Hey Children’s Charity’s current and future funding needs

  • Identifying philanthropic advisers and other bodies who could initiate introductions to new donors for Alder Hey Children’s Charity

  • Undertaking administrative responsibilities including writing thank you letters, signing grant agreements and updating internal donor records to ensure effective information management

  • Keeping up-to-date on UK donor trends.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience.

  • A team player with a positive and flexible attitude, committed to Alder Hey Children’s Charity’s mission and values

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the confidence to speak to donors in person, over the phone and through written correspondence

  • Proven creative and persuasive writing skills

  • Ability to write high-quality written proposals, applications and reports

  • Ability to compile project budgets

  • Ability to network and develop strong relationships with internal stakeholders and current and prospective funders

  • Ability to carry out in-depth research to create donor profiles, prospect lists and biographies

  • Thorough, with a high level of attention to detail.

  • Experience in driving and developing new initiatives within an organisation

  • Self-starter; highly organised, with an ability to work systematically to targets and deadlines and able to work under pressure.

  • Ability to work on own initiative and to prioritise workloads

  • Ambitious and enthusiastic, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and use tact and diplomacy

  • Practical and confident in the use of the internet as a research tool, as well as standard MS Office packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Desirable:

  • Proven track record of raising income from Trusts and Foundations, or bid-writing in a similar setting

  • Experience of using a CRM or similar database

  • Understanding of the various steps within a Trusts and Foundations funding cycle.

  • Understanding of Philanthropy and the principles of charitable giving

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

Internally, this role will hold key relationships with:

Trust and Foundations Partnership Manager, Director of Philanthropy, Charity CEO and wider Fundraising Team, Marketing and Communications team, clinicians, researchers and the innovation team at the hospital.

Externally, this role will hold key relationships with:

Key charity donors and prospects, corporate supporters / sponsors.
