Key Responsibilities

1. eCommerce & Online Sales

• Own and manage the day-to-day running of our eBay shop, including listings, sales, returns, customer messaging, and performance tracking
• Create, optimise, and maintain high-quality listings across eBay and other online sales channels
• Produce clear, accurate product descriptions and strong visual content
• Maintain an organised library of listing content and assets
• Work with the team internally to ensure accurate pricing based on product specifications
• Continuously improve listings, pricing, and conversion rates to drive revenue growth
• Monitor performance, identify trends, introduce new online sales platforms to implement improvements to support growth

2. Events, Pop-Ups & Fundraising Support

• Support planning and delivery of pop-up shops and fundraising events
• Assist with setup, merchandising, and customer engagement
• Help maximise sales and donations during events
• Contribute to fundraising campaigns and applications

3. Revenue Growth & Partnerships (Reframed)

• Promote and generate sales for framing services through Reframed
• Identify cross-selling opportunities with customers and donors
• Support growth of income across both the charity and its commercial activities

4. Customer Experience & Operations

• Provide timely, professional responses to customer enquiries
• Resolve issues relating to orders, returns, and products
• Maintain strong customer satisfaction and feedback ratings
• Ensure compliance with marketplace policies and charity standards

5. Performance & Continuous Improvement

• Track sales and fundraising performance against targets
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, revenue, and processes
• Proactively suggest and implement new ideas to grow income
• Take ownership of improving overall shop and sales performance

We protect, and lead the recovery of Somerset’s stunning, diverse, and important natural environment, making the case for nature to the public and politicians.

The Somerset Environmental Records Centre (SERC) is a non-profit organization hosted by the Somerset Wildlife Trust. We serve as the county’s central hub for data regarding wildlife sightings, habitats, and geology.

About you and the Role

You’ll be part of a team where new software and techniques can do some of the heavy lifting, but we also need you to be resourceful and innovative in your thinking. You will work closely with our Data Manager and colleagues, to refine existing systems and processes, and ensure best practice is embedded in everything that we do. Including within the centre’s data acquisition, collation, synthesis, management and analysis, where diligence and achieving efficiencies, are both priorities.

Principal elements of the role are to assist in the Data Management process within SERC, data governance and policy, data collection and capture, storage, security, integration and analysis. This includes software management and working with existing data and acquiring or accessing new data and evidence from varying sources. You’ll help ensure all incoming and outgoing data processes run smoothly, securely and are up to date, to fulfil SERC’s mission as the ‘go to’ ecological data evidence provider for the county.

Whilst working closely with the Data Manager and Head of SERC, there will be opportunities for personal development and to work with other team members in the promotion and growth of SERC, ensuring environmental information is gathered, stored, analysed, interpreted and managed in line with the requirements of the SERC partnership.

Responsibility 1: Data Management

• Helping maintain the integrity of SERC data in the databases and GIS system. This includes the establishment and conformity to SERC IT policies and protocols, ensuring that data integrity is maintained, routine data quality processes are carried out, and data protection legislation is adhered to, for example regarding personally identifiable data such as GDPR.
• Uploading data to the databases as required. Responsible for the smooth and timely transfer of data between databases/systems, such as uploads from Mapmate files and NBN uploads/extracts, discussing and resolving technical issues as necessary.
• Carrying out the analysis of SERC’s data holdings and identifying gaps at least annually in order to inform the following year’s activities.
• Undertaking SLA deliverables regarding data extracts in a timely and accurate manner as required by each Service Level Agreement.
• Providing technical input to the development of SERC software applications to assist SERC in streamlining its services and developing its products.
• Working with the SERC Data Manager and team to optimise SERC’s Engineering Data Management Process to facilitate current and future mandatory Government policies, such as BNG etc.
• Actively sharing IT and systems knowledge and skills with colleagues and volunteers.

Responsibility 2: Data Security

• Working with the SERC Data Manager to continually maintain robust systems and processes, and seek improvements in data security, for example embedding metadata into spatial outputs etc.
• Ensuring backup arrangements are adequate, ensuring data is as secure as it can be and that recovery procedures work as expected.
• Implementing the correct processes, tools, and controls to secure and protect SERC’s databases against accidental and intentional threats. Secure sensitive data and maintain the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of the databases and associated applications, systems, physical and virtual servers, including all other storage medium held on and off-site, and network infrastructure.

Job title: The Social Change Nest Financial Controller (Client Funds)

Role Purpose:

This role sits at the heart of our financial controls at the Social Change Nest and combines cash management oversight, payment operations and financial compliance. However, this is not a traditional Financial Controller position. You will work with the team to ensure robust financial controls, accurate reconciliations, secure payment processes and transparent reporting for our diverse portfolio of social impact clients. You will also be a key driver of operational improvement, identifying better ways of working as we scale.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Payment Processes & Systems Management

●Own and optimise the end-to-end payment infrastructure (banking platforms, expense management tools, Open Collective platform and accounting system integrations)

●Design, implement and monitor robust internal controls to prevent fraud, errors or unauthorised disbursements

●Streamline high-volume payment workflows while maintaining strict adherence to SCN policies

2. Bank Reconciliations & Treasury

●Ensure all client bank accounts are reconciled accurately and daily

●Investigate and resolve any variances between bank statements and the internal ledger immediately

●Track client cash positions to ensure sufficient liquidity for planned social project disbursements

3. Financial Reporting & Compliance

●Produce clear, concise financial reports for clients detailing fund movements and remaining balances

●Act as the lead contact for external audits regarding client cash and payment controls. Support the preparation of year end accounts and SCN’s external Audit as it interfaces with Client funds.

●Ensure all cash management and payment processes comply with UK Anti-Money Laundering supervision and relevant HMRC requirements

4. Operational Innovation & Client Service

●Proactively research and implement new financial technologies to enhance speed, security and transparency of client services

●Continuously evaluate existing workflows to eliminate bottlenecks and improve the client experience

●Lead the roll-out of new financial tools or system upgrades, ensuring smooth transition for internal teams and external partners

5. Leadership & Collaboration

●Line manage 1–2 members of the finance team, providing mentorship and support

●Being the point of escalation for the Finance and Delivery teams on more complex finance queries and dealing directly with our clients for financial solutions

●Contribute to finance team planning and lead on delivery of key projects

●Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders across the organisation

Skills and Experience:

Essential

• Professional accounting qualification: ACA, ACCA or CIMA
• Proven experience in a Financial Controller, Head of Finance or senior audit role with a focus on cash controls and high-volume transactions
• Strong knowledge of financial governance, internal controls and compliance frameworks
• Experience in at least one of the following:

            -managing multi-currency transactions, FX impacts and global banking corridors

            -oversight of restricted funds, ensuring disbursements align with specific grant conditions and reporting requirements

            -implementing AML and KYC protocols and ensuring rigorous due diligence on all fund movements

• IT-literate and confident with leading technological change; advanced Excel skills and track record of implementing operational improvements
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills — able to translate financial information clearly for non-finance stakeholders
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while maintaining exceptional attention to detail, and being comfortable with shifting priorities and emerging risks
• Ability to lead, manage, and work effectively both as a member of a team and on own initiative.
• Ability to think strategically, supporting the implementation of a financial strategy and suggesting appropriate changes to SCN’s services.

Desirable

• Experience in the non-profit, charity or client-services sector
• Experience in a fast-growing or start-up environment
• Understanding of power dynamics and community engagement
• Experience with innovative approaches to governance

 Location: London/Hybrid preferred – 2-3 days /week in the office

Reporting To: Finance Director

Salary: £58,000-£60,000
