Job description

A4ID is a global charity with a vision to see the law and lawyers play their full part in the global eradication of poverty. The mission of A4ID is to be an authoritative voice of the legal community, to inspire and enable lawyers to join the fight against poverty, and to ensure that legal support is available for those engaged in that fight.

For the last 15 years, A4ID has delivered unparalleled opportunities for lawyers to give their time and skills to help those working tirelessly to help meet the needs of the world’s poorest citizens. This role within both the legal and development communities has provided a unique vantage point to engage positively in the nexus between both sectors to promote a sustainable development agenda.

A4ID’s pro bono brokerage service ensures that NGOs, social enterprises and developing country governments, law societies and bar associations worldwide can access the legal support they need. A4ID matches requests for assistance from Development Partners with high-quality expertise from Legal Partners.

A4ID’s education programme brings together legal and development professionals to share best practice and learning, exploring key issues in law and development and equipping lawyers to better understand these issues.

A4ID’s thought leadership and policy work provoke discussion on best practice for the legal and development communities in key areas such as business and human rights in the legal, business and development sectors; the role of law and rule of law in international development; and the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) with its objective of eradicating poverty globally by 2030.

Since 2015, A4ID has also worked to promote global economic growth by strengthening the rule of law in developing countries through its Rule of Law Expertise UK (ROLE UK) Programme and by supporting partnerships providing high-quality, pro bono legal and judicial expertise from the UK and international legal and judicial sectors.

A4ID has therefore demonstrated an enviable track record of enabling lawyers and judges worldwide to play their part in tackling poverty, injustice, inequality, and climate change. Following such an encouraging period, A4ID is now at an important juncture in its journey.

The work of A4ID has grown in scope, impact, and complexity, building on strong, dynamic partnerships with the world’s leading lawyers, judges, development professionals, and thought leaders in law and development. A4ID is now extremely well positioned to further its growth agenda and to position itself as a global leader on the role of law and lawyers in sustainable development.

However, to ensure that A4ID is best placed to deliver on its full potential, A4ID needs its programmatic activities to be well designed and delivered, coordinated and strategic. To achieve this, A4ID will be building on its existing strong programme teams with further senior programmatic expertise, to ensure that its work remains as efficient, effective, and impactful as possible, and to maintain its track record of excellence well into the future.

A4ID is therefore seeking an outstanding individual to join its leadership and senior management teams in the new and exciting role of Chief Programmes Officer, to drive forward the implementation of A4ID’s currently strategy through the high-quality, successful delivery of its impactful programmatic activity across the world.

You will be an experienced and capable development professional with extensive experience of developing and implementing complex, impactful and high-profile programmes globally. You will be comfortable building and maintaining strong relationships with senior stakeholders and will inspire trust in the A4ID Board and team.

You will enjoy working across diverse teams of bright, capable individuals to drive high performance and achievement in a robust, emotionally intelligent manner. You will be skilled at identifying areas for operational improvement in current programmes, at designing new effective and impactful programmes, and in securing funds and income generation targets to ensure their longer-term sustainability.

You will be able to inspire the confidence of the A4ID Board and leadership team that everything is being well run and will be able to maintain positive, healthy working relationships at all levels of the organisation.

The A4ID office is based in London, UK. A4ID can be flexible on location, although there will be an expectation of attending the London office at least one day per month and as may be required for the necessary delivery of the responsibilities of the role.
