We’re looking for a new Community Rail Support Officer based in southern England and the Midlands, to support our network of community rail partnerships (CRPs) and station adoption groups.
About us
Community Rail Network is a not-for-profit organisation, working across Britain, supporting a growing ‘community rail’ movement, which helps communities get the most from their railways, promotes sustainable and inclusive travel, coordinates volunteering and place-making, and brings people together.
Community rail is made up of 75 community-based partnership organisations, and around 1,200 station friends volunteer groups and other community-led initiatives around Britain. Their activities range from creative projects for young people, to advising train operators on service improvements, to building travel confidence with families and disabled people, to biodiversity projects at stations, to promoting greener travel and tourism by rail.
Our enthusiastic team of 22 works mainly from home in different locations, but we come together regularly in person and online. We work collaboratively to advise our members, provide training, events and resources, run campaigns, and champion community rail and its insights via decision-makers and the media. We believe in developing our team and supporting everyone to reach their potential while having a good work-life balance.
About this role
The purpose of this role is to provide support and advice to community rail partnerships and groups in the South of England and Midlands, on working effectively and delivering maximum benefit to their communities and railways.
You’ll be comfortable engaging and advising local groups and communities to extend existing and set up new initiatives, and to reach wider audiences with an evidence-led, place-based approach. As well as supporting local groups, you’ll work closely with the rail industry, and wider third and public sector partners to ensure collaboration and shared success.
Main responsibilities
- Provide direct support and advice to CRPs and their officers, and other community rail groups in the region. This includes responding to queries and requests, passing on specialist queries to other members of the team, and providing proactive support through our accreditation review process and as set out in our plans;
- Support the development of skills, confidence and effectiveness across the network of CRPs and station groups, helping them to increase their positive social, environmental and economic impact, including through referral to our training, events and resources;
- Support the development of emerging community rail partnerships, station friend groups and community-led stations and railway-related projects in the region;
- Helping our members to work effectively with rail, transport, local government and community partners, supporting effective relationship building and showing positive leadership and insights on community rail within the region;
- Work with the Support Manager on delivery and monitoring of our grant schemes, and support CRPs and groups in the region to apply, deliver successfully and report back on funded work;
- Gather and share examples, feedback and insights from our members across the region, to facilitate best practice sharing and confidence across community rail and to feed into our communications, resources, events and public affairs work;
- As a member of the Community Rail Network team, participate and contribute to our wider work as relevant, such as Community Rail Week, our annual conference and Awards.
Skills, competencies and experience
- Skills in in supporting community engagement projects; an understanding of and confidence in using community engagement, local communications, project planning and evaluation techniques
- Interpersonal skills and the ability to work confidently with stakeholders at all levels and facilitate positive discussion; articulate and assertive
- Excellent writing and presentational skills
- Awareness of sustainable transport and social inclusion, and an appreciation of the importance of rail, sustainable travel and mobility to communities
- A demonstrable ability to manage time effectively and juggle a range of activities in an organised and professional manner;
- Proactive, positive and self-motivated, able to work on own initiative and inspire and enthuse others, and overcome hurdles to achieve results;
- IT literate with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, the internet and social media
Other information
- This post is home-based, but with regular travel (including overnight stays) within the south of England and Midlands, and nationally for team meetings
- The Community Rail Support Officer reports to the Support Manager within the Support and Development team
- Hours are 37 hours per week. A degree of flexibility and out-of-hours working (evenings and weekends) will be required, together with some travel and overnight absences
- This is a permanent position and includes a probationary period of three months from the date of appointment

The team
Our team in Energy Saving Trust manages the national Home Energy Scotland service on behalf of the Scottish Government. Joining our team means joining an award-winning advice service that supports hundreds of thousands of households across Scotland every year to make their homes warmer, more affordable, and sustainable.
The climate emergency and the current fuel price crisis means the work of Home Energy Scotland has never been more important. Our team is making a real difference to people’s lives, and we are also growing rapidly. We need to recruit more skilled and dedicated people to join our team now.
Our team collaborate widely with colleagues in Energy Saving Trust, staff across the Home Energy Scotland network and many other partners across Scotland. The role
The role will lead the development, design and management of training programmes for Home Energy Scotland (HES) advisors, including our advisor induction programme which is certified by the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA).
What you’ll do
Working with the HES content and training developer, customer experience team and knowledge team, you will continuously improve advisor training methods and materials.
You will develop and oversee processes to maintain and improve the skills and knowledge for HES advisors. As well as this, you will integrate accessibility and inclusivity into all training and induction programmes to ensure that diverse learning needs are supported.

About the role
Advisors will provide energy advice and raise awareness of domestic retrofit, supporting increased retrofit awareness and activity as well as working alongside staff within Local Authorities to develop and deliver projects to engage our communities and stimulate retrofit activity across the region. Energy and Retrofit Advisors will work closely with Groundwork Green Doctors supporting households suffering from fuel poverty and referring them into more specialist support where needed.
This role requires a dynamic and dedicated person who can think on their feet, someone with a caring nature who has a strong desire for helping people and is passionate about making a difference. You will need to be highly organised and adaptable as no two days will be the same.
As Groundwork’s Greener Living team grows, this role offers potential for extension and progression toward a career in Energy and Retrofit Assessment.

Nature’s Recovery Officer (Pollinators)
B-Lines are an imaginative and beautiful solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators. The B-Lines are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we are restoring and creating a series of wildflower-rich habitat stepping stones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that will weave across the UK.
Avon Wildlife Trust has been working with Buglife (the insect conservation charity) on the B-Lines approach since 2014, enabling us to target work to create continuous swathes of wildlife-rich habitat.
Over the past ten years we have been worked with a wide variety of private landowners and have delivered significant ecological enhancements across the region. This includes the restoration of over 170ha of wildflower-rich grassland and several nature-friendly orchards.
The next phase of B-Lines will focus on the West Mendips, between AWT’s reserves of Folly Farm and Browne’s Folly, with ambitions to scale up and expand this work. As the Nature’s Recovery Officer, you will work with farmers, landowners and communities to grow the network of habitats between these reserves. To ensure climate resilience, you will work on a variety of priority habitats including grasslands, hedgerows, planting in-filed trees and carrying out improvements to woodland edges, all of which are key to the survival of pollinating species.
As the Nature’s Recovery Officer you will:
· Support habitat improvement works on our reserves within the project area.
· Proactively identify sites, providing advice to farmers, landowners and communities, so that they can take action for nature by creating or improving nectar-rich habitats.
· Develop and lead volunteer opportunities, guided by the needs of the landowners and communities you are working with.
· Be supported by the experts at Buglife, who will provide technical advice and training, and ensure that the project is linked to the wider national B-Lines initiative and targeted species recovery where appropriate.

Youth Pathways is a ground breaking initiative within the Two Moors project. It has been designed to engage with young people facing barriers or disadvantages and bring them on a journey; from initial nature connection through volunteering opportunities and on to traineeships and careers in conservation. You will lead this exciting programme and deliver the activity within it; building up young people’s skills and confidence and adapting the programme as we go to respond to the voices of young people. The programme is being delivered in close partnership with Young Devon and SPACE Youth Services, so you will work closely with them as well as with colleagues within DWT and other project partners.

Your job will be to lead the development, integration and delivery of all the visitor-facing elements on our two reserves, with the aim of creating an exemplar visitor experience that maximises support for nature.

- Monitoring finances and visitor data;
- Developing successful events;
- Overseeing publicity and interpretation; and
- Managing volunteers.
The role involves working to targets and will involve some weekend working and bank holidays.
This is a great opportunity for someone to have a big positive impact on RSPB income and support, building a cohesive visitor team, and engaging and inspiring both new and traditional audiences at Old Moor nature reserve. Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- A natural leader who can build and maintain strong working relationships, and motivate and inspire people at all levels.
- Sound understanding of systems and procedures necessary to run a commercial visitor operation.
- Sound knowledge of how to deliver the highest standard of customer care resulting in exemplar visits.
- Experience of successfully recruiting, leading and developing a team of volunteers and staff to deliver a joined up, coherent and high-quality visitor offer for all visitors to the reserve.
- Experience of pro-actively promoting the visitor offer to target audiences.
- Proven track record of setting and achieving agreed targets and KPI’s for income generation, quality of visit and footfall targets for the reserve.
- Experience of maximising opportunities for visitor engagement, delivering brand and converting visits into support (e.g. support for RSPB’s Saving Nature Strategy).
- Experience of organising events and activities with supporting documentation to ensure relevant RSPB procedures and legal compliance requirements are met.
- Basic computer literacy.
The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
