We’re looking for an exceptional advocate to join our skilled and committed team. Advocacy in Barnet has a well-earned reputation for delivering high quality, free, independent and confidential advocacy. We are a small but dynamic Charity committed to resolving issues or concerns people may have about their health and well-being or health and social care services. Through advocacy, we aim to ensure that every older person has a voice and they are in control of decisions which are made about them. Advocacy creates the space for their experiences, views, wishes and feelings to be heard so they can contribute to improving the health and care services they use.

Advocacy in Barnet’s work currently focuses on people over the age of 50 and, as part of this, offers generic advocacy including advocacy under the Care Act and advocacy at times of transition. Volunteers are key to the success of the Charity’s work and as such, Advocacy in Barnet recruits, trains and supports people to act as advocates across all of its projects.

The post holder will support the team of paid and unpaid advocates to deliver appropriate and accessible independent advocacy. You will have substantial experience as an advocate, an understanding of the issues older people face, how health and social care services operate and relevant legislation. You will ideally, hold the independent advocacy qualification. You will have an understanding of principles of advocacy and of the statutory regulations and key guidance covering this work.

You will have a strong commitment to service excellence and to supporting people to have their voice heard. You will have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing and the ability to facilitate the involvement of the person in the process they are going through. You will be able to check, challenge and negotiate with people at all levels of seniority, and have good report writing skills. With strong IT skills, including a working knowledge of using databases, the post-holder will be expected to be able to work on her/his own initiative as well as working as part of a team. We are looking for someone with a warm, friendly personality who has enthusiasm, a sense of commitment and a genuine desire to make a difference working for a small but high-impact charity.
