Role Summary

As the Director of Research and Public Affairs you lead a team working across the full range of research work (including commissioning, grant-making and in-house research) and public affairs work (including policy analysis, advocacy work and mobilising our activists). You also contribute to the charity’s strategies, leadership and governance as a member of the Executive Team. Ultimately, your role is to generate new knowledge; and communicate knowledge, ideas and emotions to change hearts and minds, creating tangible reductions in alcohol harm across the UK.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Leadership, strategy & planning

1. Lead the research and public affairs functions at Alcohol Change UK.

2. Produce and deliver plans across our research and public affairs work programmes that are ambitious for change (impact), realistic given our resources, and consistent with our strategy, our other work programmes, and our values.

3. Set budgets, tightly control costs and identify opportunities for making savings, growing income and making the case for investment.

4. Appropriately monitor and evaluate our research and public affairs work with a view to knowing, growing and showing the impact we make.

Research

5. Work closely with the CEO, Policy and Research Manager, R&P sub-committee and Wales Office to determine and oversee the charity’s programme of commissioned research, research grants, and in-house research.

6. Ensure that all research is designed with impact-in-mind and, once complete, that it delivers on that impact through active and ongoing communication of the findings to the right audiences with the right messages through the right channels.

7. Lead the research function to be the central hub for the charity on the topic of alcohol harm and its solutions, staying on top of new research.

8. Influence the research spending of other agencies (e.g. NIHR) with a view to maximising funding into alcohol research in general.

Public Affairs

9. Lead and manage the charity’s public affairs activity, deploying the CEO, Research & Policy Officer and other staff as a team.

10.  Lead our work with external alliances, such as the Alcohol Health Alliance and the Alcohol and Families Alliance, and on the APPG on Alcohol Harm.

11.  Develop excellent relationships with Parliamentarians, civil servants, charities and other important institutional actors in our field.

12.  Build Campaigner journeys for our engagement audience to best mobilise them to help us with our influencing work.

13.  Lead on the commissioning and management of any external public affairs agencies, parliamentary monitoring services and similar suppliers.

14.  Ensure our policy positions are kept up-to-date, based on emerging evidence and contemporary thinking, and consistent with our principles.

15.  Work closely with the Director of Engagement and Fundraising to effectively mobilise and deploy our activists, Community Champions and other supporters so they (i) make a difference, (ii) become better informed over time, and (iii) remain motivated to campaign for our cause.

16.  Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to influence all forms of media to better support our desired outcomes.

Team Leadership and Management

17.  Lead and manage the research and public affairs team(s), ensuring excellent line management.

18.  Lead the process of recruiting and inducting new team members, as appropriate.

19.  Proactively develop your own skills and experience as well as those of staff within your team.

Cross-organisational Role

20.  Act as a spokesperson for the charity at high profile events and across media, including radio and TV.

21.  Be an active and positive member of the charity’s Executive Team.

22.  Work with colleagues across the charity to support their work and to act as ‘one team’.

23.  Work particularly closely with colleagues in the Wales office, optimising opportunities for joint working.

24.  Contribute actively and positively to the development of charity-wide strategies and activity.

Other Duties

25.  Continually develop your knowledge of alcohol harm and solutions to it.

26.  Act as a positive ambassador for Alcohol Change UK at all times.

27.  Know, embrace and actively uphold the values of Alcohol Change UK at all times.

As a Support and Advocacy Officer you will join a skilled team who collectively provide a unique UK-wide support and advocacy service to over 1500 members. 

You will primarily provide direct support and practical guidance to our Fabry members.  This patient group is largely adult focused but there will be elements of family and child support. You will raise awareness within both the Fabry community and external agencies; and contribute to the development of resources, to promote self-advocacy within the patient group.  A key objective of the role will be to build a sense of community and identity for our Fabry membership.  You will also have the opportunity to facilitate and contribute to project work, including youth engagement, advisory boards, and support groups.

In addition to supporting the Fabry community there will also be a requirement to provide support to those affected by other conditions under our umbrella.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop a good understanding of MPS and Fabry conditions
• Develop knowledge of legislation and best practice relevant to supporting people with life-long conditions
• Provide emotional support, information and guidance in areas such as diagnosis, disease awareness, health and social care and disability benefits
• Support individuals and families to access best possible clinical management and treatment options
• Support and signpost people towards mental health and psychological support as required
• Undertake UK-wide travel to visit individuals and families and attend meetings and events
• Support the provision of online support and advice via social media channels
• Promote awareness by giving talks and presentations to outside organisations, professionals and the general public

 Experience & skills

• Minimum of two years’ experience of working with individuals with disabilities within health and social care, education, or related field
• Ability to communicate accurately, concisely and with clarity
• Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple tasks
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to upholding best practices
• Excellent IT skills to maintain accurate case recording, produce clear reports, correspondences and presentations
• Collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for working in a small, dedicated team
• Experience of managing projects and service development is advantageous

Prior knowledge of Fabry Disease is not required as in-depth support and training will be provided.  Regular supervision and a supportive work culture will help you to expand your knowledge and become an expert in the work you are undertaking.

About the PVRI
We’re a small charity with a global reach and an important purpose: to reduce the burden of pulmonary vascular disease.

PVD is a serious condition which can lead to heart damage and trigger symptoms like breathlessness, chest pain, fatigue, poor growth, fainting and light-headedness. It can reduce both quality of life and length of life, but it isn’t widely recognised, or well-understood.

We bring together an international network of professionals to improve clinical care, education and PVD research. The network comprises thousands of clinicians, scientists, academics and industry partners, supported by our small team in Bermondsey, London. Together we deliver conferences, e-learning, an academic journal, and we raise awareness of the condition.

Much of the work is done by international working groups, and we’re seeking a new Project Coordinator to provide administrative and project support to those groups.

About the role
The job involves co-ordinating and servicing meetings across different time zones, maintaining workgroup records, developing surveys, pulling together academic papers for publication, event planning, and project work.

We’re looking for someone with excellent organisational and administrative skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to write and adapt complex information to produce clear, accurate and accessible documents in English. Non-executive appointments of four lay and three osteopath panel members

We are looking for seven new members to join our Professional Conduct Committee and Health Committee: the positions are for three osteopaths and four non-osteopaths (lay positions). This is an opportunity to become part of a fair decision-making process for a modern, inclusive and innovative healthcare regulator.

The Professional Conduct Committee hears and adjudicates concerns raised against osteopaths which have been referred to it by the Investigating Committee. These relate to professional misconduct, incompetence or where an osteopath is convicted of a criminal offence. Professional Conduct Committee members also sit on the Health Committee, which considers cases where an osteopath’s health may impair their ability to practise.

You will be expected to commit no more than 20 days a year (often a few days at a time) depending on caseload, plus some extra time, for example for mandatory training, reading and appraisals. The daily attendance fee is £330 (with a further payment of £50 per day for lay members when they are sitting as a Panel Chair). We pay reasonable travel and subsistence expenses. Appointment starts on 1 April 2025 (initially for up to four years).

Job Purpose

The successful candidate for our Policy Manager (Maternity cover) position will be joining BSR’s high performing and dynamic External Affairs team, which is promoting excellence and driving up the standard of Rheumatology care across the four nations of the UK by affecting public policy change. In 2023 our External Affairs team were nominated for an industry wide Public Affairs award for hugely impactful Homecare Medicines Campaign, so it is a fantastic time to join the team and we continue to work on the cutting-edge of policy and public affairs.  

The role of the Policy Manager is to work closely with our members to give a voice to the society within emerging health policy discussions, public consultations and to play an important role in the development of our integrated departmental campaigning approach. The Policy Manager also plays a leading role in the development of our pro-active policy work and helps to shape the direction of the society’s lobbying. In the last year the Policy Manager has played a crucial role in producing expert advice and guidance, as well as groundbreaking health economics research, which are improving the delivery of Rheumatology care across the country – and 2024/25 is going to be another exciting period for the team.  

Main responsibilities

• To develop the Society’s pro-active policy agenda by conducting research, writing policy papers and managing research contracts in-line with of our goal to improve the quality of care in Rheumatology services.
•  To drive excellence in all aspects of rheumatology by managing BSR’s member-led Clinical Affairs Committee and supporting the committee to deliver on their work plan. 
• To co-ordinate BSR’s response to health policy developments and in regular public consultations, for example technology appraisals, guidelines in development and quality standards.
• To support the development of the Society’s leadership voice in the public policy space by working closely with the Head of EA and Public Affairs Manager to deliver our integrated campaign approach to influencing change.
• To build and maintain stakeholder relations with internal and external stakeholders and to engage with relevant bodies to represent the society as and when required on emerging policy issues.
• To lead on growing awareness amongst the BSR membership of the impact of our policy work on improving Rheumatology care by delivering planned communications and contributions to regional and national member bodies. 

Person Specification

Experience 

1.  A demonstrable interest in helping people with rheumatic conditions to receive the highest quality outcomes and live well, championing the specialty, influencing change and building a thriving community of best practice. 
2.  Experience working in a policy role within a political, governmental or not-for-profit environment, or other experience which you can demonstrate matches suitability with the role responsibilities. 
3.  A demonstrable interest in health policy or a strong working knowledge of the current NHS and health policy landscape. 
4.  Experience working with or management of committees and/or within a membership organisation. 
5.  An academic or professional understanding of the use of different research methods and their application in conducting research and writing papers. 

Abilities and Skills 

1.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate complex issues succinctly to different audiences.  
2.  Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop stakeholder relationships.  
3.  Good analytical skills with a demonstrable ability to digest public policy and communicate its key outcomes.  
4.  Excellent organisational and record keeping skills, with project management being a bonus.

As the Training Programmes Manager you will have oversight and responsibility for the healthcare professional training projects and activities, as well as growing the M4RD network within HCP groups and training institutions.

You will be key to rolling out Rare Disease 101 training for healthcare professionals all over the UK and potentially abroad. While you are not expected to deliver training yourself you will be pivotal to creating opportunities and facilitating all aspects of the programme.

• Co-lead M4RD’s Ambassador Programme, managing the clinical and medical student ambassadors.

You will work between police custody and criminal courts. You will assess, advise and refer offenders, providing them with the opportunity to access treatment to address their substance use. Working with courts, you will promote the use of Community Sentence Treatment Requirements (Drug Rehabilitations Requirements and Alcohol Treatment Requirements) amongst all court professionals and the judiciary, contributing to Pre-Sentence Reports and advocate for our service users.

You will be responsible for delivering all elements of substance use work, including assertive engagement, harm reduction support (including naloxone provision), as well as other associated duties. You need to have an understanding of the issues faced by people who use drugs and alcohol, and who commit crime, and be dedicated to delivering a service that supports these individuals to make positive changes to their behaviour, health and well-being.

The specialist nurse will cover the South-west region – providing support and advice to people with spinal cord injury, their families and healthcare professionals.

About the role

Working as part of the Health & Care Quality team and within a designated geographical region, the SCI nurse specialist will support those with newly acquired spinal cord injuries who are not admitted to specialist services, or those with established spinal cord injuries who are being re-admitted to hospital for treatment unrelated to their impairment. Through telephone, email or face-to-face visits the SCI nurse specialist will offer guidance and advice to these individuals and/or their family members, addressing issues of concern associated with treatment and care and liaising on their behalf with healthcare professionals in the treating hospitals to ensure these are dealt with in line with best practice standards.

The SCI nurse specialist will also act as an educator for healthcare professionals involved in the treatment and care of spinal cord injured people and working in non-specialist settings and will contribute to the development and delivery of educational offerings available via the SIA Academy. When required, the SCI nurse specialist will support individuals through elements of the NHS Continuing Health Care assessment process, attending review or appeal hearings in their capacity as clinical specialist in SCI care. They will also contribute to the monitoring, evaluation and development of the SCI nurse specialist service via mechanisms put in place for that purpose.

Who are we?

Myaware is the only charity in the UK dedicated solely to the care and support of people affected by myasthenia. 

We are working hard to raise awareness, as it is a little-unknown condition. We provide support for people with myasthenia and their families, whilst offering advice and tips for living with the illness. 

We also fund the research that brings us closer to finding a cure as well as funding specialists nurses and advisors.

The myasthenia’s are a group of neuromuscular conditions. They are rare but also manageable and can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. Myasthenia gravis, ocular myasthenia, and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome are autoimmune conditions whereas congenital myasthenic syndrome is caused by an inherited genetic fault. It is thought that there are approximately 20,000 people currently living with myasthenia in the UK.
