SERVICE & ROLE SUMMARY

The Befriending Service is for people over 60 years old who are lonely and/or socially isolated and who may have difficulty getting out and about alone. The service aims to alleviate the effects of loneliness and social isolation, support people to continue to live independently in their own home and enhance quality of life through the support of a face to face home visit by a volunteer befriender or a regular call from a volunteer telephone befriender.

Our Befriending Service provides support to clients using the service through either a weekly home visit (currently suspended due to Covid-19) a telephone call, or via digital interaction through our newly developed face to face digital support programme. Our telephone befrienders usually call the same person each week to provide a listening ear, links to other services and monitor general well-being. In line with our Hybrid working arrangements you will be based between our Chelmsford/Thurrock offices and working from home in agreement with the service Team Leader or Manager. You will be required to travel across all parts of Thurrock, Southend and Essex as and when necessary. 

Duties will include working across all areas of Thurrock, Southend and Essex whilst working under the supervision of the service Team Leader.

You will be required to attend occasions and/or events. Meetings and/or training sessions may also arise that will require your presence in Thurrock, Southend and/or Essex as required. 

All befrienders will receive training and ongoing support through both the Befriending Service Manager and the Team Leader as required.

All staff working for the Charity are expected to have a degree of flexibility and adaptability within their role depending on the response of the Charity to Covid - 19 and the impact on our beneficiaries, volunteers and funders. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide telephone support to volunteer befrienders and the clients whom they are visiting 

  • Provide telephone support to clients using the service to alleviate loneliness and social isolation and help to build confidence.

  • Report any safeguarding concerns or problems to the Befriending Service Team Leader or Manager immediately.

  • Read and understand the information provided as part of the induction training.

  • Assist the service Team Leader and/or Manager to facilitate or carry out volunteer induction training sessions as necessary

  • Understand and work to the general  befriending service guidelines, boundaries and expectations.

  • Adhere to Age UK Essex confidentiality policy.

  • Deal with service enquiries in the appropriate manner.

  • Play an active role and assist with the development of our face to face digital befriending programme.

  • To represent the Charity in an appropriate manner.

  • Maintain and update client files and regularly monitor their progress.

  • Assist the service Team Leader to provide accurate monthly reports 

  • Engage with statutory services and other partnerships across Thurrock, Southend and Essex to promote client enablement.

  • Assist the service Team Leader to actively promote the service across Thurrock and Essex ensuring base quality standards are fully achieved.

  • Adjust and implement changes to the service in line with service provision and development needs.

  • Help to ensure the service is maintained to the highest standard.

  • Attend and contribute to regular team meetings organised by the Befriending service Team Leader or Manager.

  • Arrange and attend volunteer support events/meetings from time to time as requested by the service Team Leader or Manager

  • Carry out any other duties consistent with the responsibilities of this post as requested from time to time by the befriending service Team Leader or Manager.

  • Signpost to other services as necessary 

  • Assist with Food Parcel deliveries from time to time as requested by the befriending service Team Leader or Manager.
