Job description

Are you ready to join a Government department undergoing an exciting and significant Digital Transformation Cabinet Office are seeking the appointment of a permanent User Researcher to help support the ambition to make UK Government digital services the best in the world.

This role sits within the Change and Deliver team in the CDIO. They are responsible for leading and supporting the delivery of excellent digital services and digital transformation changes with business units across the Cabinet Office. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects from high profile public-facing sites to internal digital transformation projects.

Job description

As a user researcher you will work as part of a multidisciplinary agile team with other digital and policy experts to deliver one or more digital services. You will plan, design and carry out research activities with users that help teams get a deep understanding of the people that use our services. You will be expected to work independently on a team and will be responsible for understanding and documenting the needs of users, using a range of appropriate user research methodologies.

You will:

work as part of multidisciplinary agile teams, delivering new services that meet user needs and Cabinet Office policy objectives

plan, design, prepare and deliver user research activities to support the design, development and continuous improvement of digital services (including contextual discovery, early stage concept and prototype testing, lab based usability and accessibility testing)

design and run contextual and discovery research to develop a deep understanding of the needs of all users of a service

manage the usability and accessibility testing process from recruiting participants, designing test tasks, and preparing discussion guides, to test moderation, analysis and presenting results

manage ethics and consent processes, and support the development of privacy impact assessments

lead the design, execution and analysis of quantitative surveys

communicate user research findings to the delivery team and stakeholders so that they share a strong and empathetic understanding of their users (including presentations at show and tells, designing and maintaining research outputs, formal reports, etc)

provide actionable insights to support design decision making

work closely with business analysts, designers and developers to turn user research findings into stories and other deliverables that lead to valuable product and service features

use performance and web analytics to create a rich picture of user behaviour to tell the full story of how and why people use our services

participate in service assessments as necessary providing user research evidence to support the relevant points in the digital service standard

contribute to the user research community within the Cabinet Office, Government Digital Services and across government

Essential skills and experience:

Experience of designing and facilitating research, using basic methodologies including contextual research studies, quantitative research studies, usability and accessibility testing.

Experience of how to apply basic techniques for the analysis of research data and synthesis of findings, how to involve your team in analysis and synthesis, and present clear findings that colleagues can understand and use.

Experience working in a multidisciplinary agile development environment with business analysts, UX designers, software developers and product owners.

A good understanding of the social and technological context for government services, and experience of aligning user research activities to help teams understand changing user behaviour.

Experience of understanding what problem the team is trying to solve and how to align user research activities to inform decision making and action.

Some knowledge of the technologies used to build and operate digital services and an understanding of the different technical roles in a digital team.

An understanding and experience of a range of user-centred practices, and how to work with colleagues to plan and do continuous user research in a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable skills and experience:

Experience of advocating for user research and engaging sceptical colleagues and stakeholders.

Familiarity with the Digital Service Standard.

Presenting evidence at service assessments.
