The Information Services team at Alzheimer’s Research UK is responsible for providing information about dementia and dementia research to the public. The team operates the charity’s Dementia Research Infoline and produces and disseminates health information booklets and other resources. The team also has responsibility for promoting the value of research involvement to the public, and actively helps people to get involved.
We are looking for 2 confident, friendly and proactive people to join us as an Information Officer. In this role you will be facilitating the day-to-day operation of the Dementia Research Infoline, providing the public with information about dementia, current dementia research and opportunities to get involved in research. Reporting to the Information Services Manager, the Information Officer will also play a key role in maintaining and expanding the charity’s health information resources.

Main tasks of role:
- Act as the first point of contact for the Dementia Research Infoline, providing information about dementia and research and signposting to other organisations.
- Respond to health and research enquiries by phone, letter and email.
- Discuss with the public the different ways people can get involved in research and the types of studies looking for volunteers.
- Assist members of the public with registration for Join Dementia Research. This involves processing and recording volunteer health information and ensuring data is up-to-date and contact with registrants maintained appropriately.
- Write, update and promote health information materials in accordance with the principles of the Information Standard and in a variety of formats.
- Manage the confidential handling of personal data.
What we are looking for;
- Degree in a science subject or equivalent
- Good knowledge of the clinical research process and how the public can play a part in that process.
- Knowledge of good practice around information governance.
- Confidence working with computers; knowledge of Word, Excel, and Outlook and general IT skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with a sensitive and patient phone manner.
- Ability to translate scientific research to make it accessible to the public, both over the phone and in written responses.
- Ability to identify appropriate sources and evaluate evidence to provide up-to-date, accurate, evidence-based information.
- Ability to pull together information quickly from a variety of sources.
- Ability to work on ongoing projects while prioritising responses to Infoline calls and emails.
- Excellent organisational skills with a keen eye for detail and the ability to prioritise tasks within a busy working environment.
- Experience of discussing health or research matters with the public.
- Experience of writing complex health information in a simple and accessible way.
- Appreciation of the emotional impact of dementia on individuals and an awareness of services and organisations relevant to people with dementia.
- Resilience for handling occasional challenging calls.
- A confident, friendly and professional attitude; would feel at ease representing the charity to a range of audiences.
- Proactive and keen to explore innovative ways to promote the work of ARUK.
Location: Granta Park, near Cambridge.
Salary: Circa £26,000 per annum, plus benefits
