Job description

Are you an experienced media and communications professional interested in the intersection between technology and human rights? Do you think creatively to communicate new research to diverse audiences through multimedia approaches? Are you passionate about applying your media skills to holding governments and corporations to account?


As the Media and Communications Manager for the Algorithmic Accountability Lab (AAL), you will manage the AAL's communication strategy, public relations, awareness building activities and global media work in order to advance the team's human rights agenda, particularly regarding public sector use of algorithmic systems. You will support other Amnesty Tech projects on their media and communications needs, as required. You will think strategically to develop and implement long term media and communications programmes as well as clear distribution plans for outputs, which target key stakeholder groups and audiences. You will also respond to news stories and recent developments within the technology and human rights sector.


A driven, strategic and creative Media and Communications Manager, you have extensive experience in delivering key messages, distributing communications outputs and sharing research to diverse audiences across a wide variety of platforms. You are comfortable in leading, developing and implementing comprehensive media programmes and communication strategies. Your novel and creative ideas will ensure that the work of the AAL and Amnesty Tech has maximum impact and engagement. You are proactive in developing and cultivating relationships with media and journalists and will use this network to amplify the work of the Algorithmic Accountability Lab and Amnesty Tech more broadly.

  • Develop and implement a media and communications strategy designed for high impact to build the AAL's profile as a leader in holding governments to account on their use of algorithms and Artificial Intelligence, and contribute to raising Amnesty Tech's profile as a leading voice on technology and human rights;
  • Lead on the creation of communications outputs (video, documentary, podcasts, blogs and more)
  • Both lead and support on reactive communications to global events in the tech and human rights space
  • Proactively cultivate and manage relationships with media outlets and journalists

  • Substantial and relevant experience in a similar role
  • Demonstrated experience and/or interest in taking a creative approach to media and communications;
  • Experience of leading, developing and implementing successful media and communications strategies, as well as campaigns;
  • Proven experience in utilising digital channels
