About the role
As our Senior Finance & Operations Officer, you will be at the heart of our organisation’s success. Working closely with the Director, Finance and Operations, you will help to manage financial processes, streamline operations, and ensure both our UK and EU teams are properly resourced to drive our mission forward. You will interact daily with a broad range of stakeholders in the UK and the EU including senior level staff, external consultants and suppliers in the while also working closely with Finance, HR & IT colleagues in the US.
Key responsibilities
Financial Management (30%)
- Support on day-to-day financial activities including financial reporting, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Develop and implement best practices to optimise operational efficiency and effectiveness.
- Collaborate with the team to develop and monitor project budgets.
- Support decision-making through insightful financial analysis.
Operational Support (40%)
- Be the first point of contact for all enquiries from the campaigns and fundraising teams in the UK and EU.
Contracts Lifecycle Management (30%)
- Oversee the lifecycle of all supplier contracts: creation, submission and signing. (Legal contract knowledge is not required.)
About you
You will be a confident, dynamic individual with a can-do attitude who has a proven track record of juggling competing priorities and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The role is varied and has a significant financial element so strong numeracy skills, a solid knowledge of financial management principles paired with good communications skills are important. Reporting directly to a dedicated and passionate Chief Executive Officer, and playing a key role within the leadership team, the Director of Finance & Company Secretary role represents an excellent opportunity to create and deliver long term financial strategies that supports the services and causes championed by the Society. We are seeking a collaborative, confident, dynamic and engaging individual who can ensure all statutory requirements are met alongside the continual development of controls to safeguard the Society’s assets.
The Director of Finance will be a first-class communicator who can work in collaboration with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You will be a strong advocate for a finance team that offers a best-in-class delivery of customer focused financial services. You must enjoy hands-on management and oversee the Head of Finance and the Finance team, ensuring that they continue to provide robust financial governance and control. This will all be conjunction with growing their knowledge and capacity with the Dynamic 365 platform to meet the ever-evolving needs and strategy of the Society. The post holder will also safeguard the financial integrity of the Society, its governance, and ensure it is fully compliant with all statutory requirements. This purpose extends to the Society’s subsidiaries.
This rewarding and varied role will see you will have full participation in the formulation and presentation of the Society’s strategic and operational plans and work closely with the CEO and Board of Trustees to make the British Horse Society the best it can be.
The Society's Head Office is based near Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Hybrid working is in place with 2-3 days per week required onsite.
Essential Criteria
- Fully Qualified Accountant
- Proven experience at a senior level in a finance role with responsibility across the whole finance function.
- Experience at a senior level as Company Secretary or equivalent
- Experienced in delivering finance system and/or ERP transformation
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to develop team members to their full potential.
- Demonstrated aptitude for strategic thinking, planning and analysis.
- Excellent financial planning, annual budgeting and forecasting skills
Desirable Criteria
- Charity sector experience particularly the nature of unrestricted, designated and restricted funds, VAT Partial Exemption, Gift Aid and the Charity SORP
- An understanding of education and qualification regulation and compliance
- Experience of Microsoft Dynamics Business Central

Purpose of the job:
This role is responsible for supporting the Director of Foundations, Organisations and Institutions to maximise income from foundations and organisations and institutions. The post-holder will develop a robust pipeline of funding through organisations based in the UK and internationally.
Skills and experiance required:
● Minimum five (5) years of professional experience successfully delivering high value, multi-year funding from the UK and internationally
● Extensive experience of donor prospecting and pipeline management
● A strong background in foundation, organisation and institutional bid writing, application processes, reporting and stewarding with successful 5 and 6 figure outcomes
● Demonstrable experience of personally securing 5 and 6 figure sum gifts
● Experience of complex bid development and working with delivery teams on programme design and grant management
● Excellent written and spoken English
● Sound strategic thinking and planning skills and the ability to think creatively, set priorities, and develop of work-plans
● Ability to work under pressure and with multiple competing priorities
● Strong attention to detail
● Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills

We are seeking an experienced Fundraising Manager to drive forward relationship building and income generation across all income streams, especially Individual Giving including appeals and major donors, Corporates, Trusts & Foundations and Legacies.
You will collaborate across the Trust to develop innovative and compelling funding proposals, delivering excellent stewardship to existing donors, and identifying, researching and engaging new prospects. You will ensure continuous improvement and innovation and an appropriate balance of fundraising activity across all streams, evaluating new ideas for income generation and strategies for implementation.
Working closely with the Director of Fundraising and Engagement you will develop the Fundraising Strategy, and as a member of the Extended Leadership Team, will be the lead for driving forward sustainable fundraising activity in collaboration with colleagues.
A compelling and engaging communicator, you’ll be adept at managing a portfolio of donors at different stages – from prospecting and cultivation through to ask, stewardship and retention, working at all levels of the Trust to achieve ambitious fundraising targets.
You must have substantial experience working in a senior fundraising position with a natural talent for building positive relationships both internally and externally, developing a fundraising team and growing a mixed fundraising portfolio. - regularly analyse data to understand the effectiveness of processes across the organisation, paying close attention to detail at all times,
- complete process mapping and reviews in order to maximise efficiency, coming up with solutions to complex problems swiftly.
About you:
To be successful in this role you should be truly process driven, with experience of implementing new processes and streamlining existing ones, with a knack for understanding a problem, analysing, and then fixing it. You’ll need to be a people person, as you’ll be business partnering colleagues and ‘meeting them where they are’, as they map out their processes and identify areas for improvement. You’ll need to be very detail orientated, and it would be beneficial if you have some Six Sigma certification to support your experience in process improvement. We are seeking an experienced IT professional to join the charity. This is a newly created position reporting to the Head of IT. The aim of this role is to encompass the charity’s Helpdesk (1st through 3rd line support) and IT Technician responsibilities to include new builds and repairs, network and server maintenance, telecoms improvements as well as project support. About the role
