PURPOSE OF THE JOB
- To engage and work with a network of local disabled people and Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations in a variety of ways, including face to face meetings, in order to strengthen the voice, representation and participation of disabled residents and identify issues in the borough that have an impact on disabled people and to advocate for them and make their voice heard, taking action to tackle inequalities faced by them.
- To develop and run events in the borough that increase awareness and understanding of disabled people.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Work closely with the Senior managers on the delivery of all external and inyernal communications
- Support the development of communications materials, including proactive press statements or releases, social media posts, speeches, blogs and articles.
- Undertake desk research to support the development of communications materials.
- Support with reactive communications, such as responding to media enquiries (including occasional out of hours cover when required).
- Assist with the management of the press office function, including tools and subscriptions
- To develop a disability network that brings together key disability groups, organisations, services and residents with the purposes of raising awareness on disabilities, offering a platform for effective engagement and the sharing of knowledge and experience.
- Supporting the disability network to be a vehicle for consultation and offering opportunities for individual voices to be heard.
- Form active and meaningful relationships with other local disability organisations and utilise them to engage a broad range of disabled people in the network’s activity. Ensure the views of a range of disabilities and organisations are represented.
- To represent the disability network on related forums in Tower Hamlets including the central Equalities Hub
- To support members to work with Council Equality networks and Voluntary and Community Sector organisations to ensure that the network is community led.
- To set up a virtual network for disabled residents to increase and strengthen accessibility, representation, and participation
- Actively promote and recruit members to participate in the disability network through networking, outreach, and attendance at relevant events.
- Evaluate the impact of communications, measuring success through analytics and feedback, and supporting implementation of learning in future work
- Support communications planning and coordination, including liaising with colleagues across the organisation.
- Work closely with the Senior Officer to support Apasen’s campaigning activity.
- Devise and produce a monthly internal newsletter for the disability network.
- Collaborate with network leads to coordinate communication of network activity and events.
- Undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required within the scope of the role
- Plan and arrange quarterly network meetings which would include creating agendas, consulting members on the content of the meeting and servicing the network.
- Support network members to represent the network as well as themselves at any other relevant conferences and events.
- To deliver a programme of events that enhances community cohesion, celebrate disabled people and increase understanding and awareness. Events will include the International Day of People with Disabilities and World Mental Health Day.
- Contribute to the improvement of services for disabled people by working with the Council and other local community organisations.
- Represent Apasen positively in a variety of situations and respond professionally to general enquiries.
- Keep up to date with current issues and good practice in the field of disabilities.

Essential skillset Experience/Knowledge
- Experience of advocating for the rights of people with disabilities.
- Experience of using person centred approaches with people with disabilities.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with people with a disability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to adjust communication style to different audiences, and provide accessible information.
- Ability to use a range of multimedia approaches to facilitate effective communication.
- Knowledge of the challenges facing people with protected characteristics
- Experience in writing and presenting reports Attributes

- High attention to detail and ability to produce accurate documents to deadlines
