Job description

Our mission is to empower young people to thrive in a fast-changing world. Building on a strong platform, we're looking for a new chief executive to lead the renewal of Apps for Good’s strategy and operations as we broaden the scope and impact of our work. You’ll have the chance to shape our next chapter with ambitious plans and renewed vision for our future.

Who we are

Apps for Good is an award-winning charity empowering young people between 10-20 years of age and giving them the skills they need to thrive. For more than 10 years we’ve worked with teachers to unlock the potential of over 220,000 students globally and have an exceptional track-record, reputation and network of supporters. We are part of a small but growing ecosystem of non-profit organisations supporting schools and teachers creating more authentic, real-world-based and impactful learning experiences for young people. Our programmes support young people with the skills and confidence they need to be purposeful innovators and proactive agents to shape their own future.

Our students are supported by over a thousand start-up, technology, design and business professionals who serve as expert volunteers. Over the years we have worked with outstanding philanthropic and corporate partners, including most recently Spotify, SAP, LEGO, Bank of New York Mellon and Deutsche Bank, but also Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Dell, Nominet Trust, Nesta, Google, Omidyar Network, Thomson Reuters, Barclaycard, Facebook, Samsung, Tata Consultancy Services, TalkTalk, Salesforce, Airbnb, Garfield Weston Foundation, Sofronie Foundation, Comic Relief, Big Lottery Fund, Virgin Red, Stavros Niarchos Foundation and many others.

Triggered by the double challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, we’re now embarking on and investing in an exciting new path. Young people, especially those with experience of disadvantage, are not learning the skills they need to create innovative solutions to climate change in conjunction with their wellbeing. We are creating a new programme, building on our existing methodology, experience and networks, so that young people can thrive in a transformed post-carbon society.

The team

We are a charity with a start-up mindset. We are a small, close-knit, highly ambitious and energetic team including c. 13 people who all believe strongly in our mission and values. If you believe in the power of authentic, real and impactful education and technology to transform lives, then you will be the perfect fit.

The role

After celebrating our 10-year anniversary in 2020, we’re looking ahead to the most effective contribution we can make in the next 10 years as a small charity. We would like to bring on board a new CEO to lead the renewal of our vision and strategic direction, building on our strengths, networks and expertise in technology education work and the new climate action and wellbeing programme.

As CEO you’ll have a wide-ranging role that will encompass taking on big strategic challenges and overseeing our financial sustainability, leading our highly-skilled and motivated team and developing key new funding partnerships, as well as getting stuck-in to projects. Working closely with the Chief Operating Officer, Senior Team and our social franchise partners, and supported by the Trustees and Council Members, your key responsibilities are to:

  • Put together the strategic plan for the organisation and set ambitious goals and objectives for the team

  • Drive shared values and culture that the team believe in

  • Actively support the development of key new funding partnerships

  • Put together the annual budget and manage the financial affairs of the charity

  • Manage the day-to-day affairs of the charity, including UK operations and supporting our social franchise partner in Portugal and other global partnerships, and line manage members of the senior team

  • Oversee legal, risk, and hiring and reviewing the performance of charity employees and contractors

  • Proven experience as a leader and manager who inspires and empowers a highly-skilled team, with a collaborative approach

  • Demonstrable experience in developing strategic and business plans and successfully executing them in a fast-moving environment

  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas: charity management at a senior level, education, technology, start-up, design, and/or climate change or well-being learning

  • Highly effective and compelling communicator including excellent presentation and listening skills

  • Confident at networking and engaging with stakeholders at all levels

  • Positive, communicative and proactive approach to work and problem-solving

  • Experience developing and managing organisational budgets

  • Experience and understanding of charity fundraising and developing key funding partnerships

  • Experience managing and leading a distributed team

  • Excellent organisational and leadership skills

  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Deep belief in Apps for Good’s mission and the impact we have on education and young people

This is a permanent UK-based role, working remotely with regular travel to meet stakeholders as required, when safe to do so. We currently plan to meet as a team once per month in London. We offer flexible working, health care insurance, 24 days holiday and extra days off over Christmas, plus you get your birthday off!

We have a long history of flexible and remote working across our team and believe everyone should have a good work/life balance while contributing to work they care about.

We are committed to developing our team and supporting their career aspirations. We are incredibly proud that colleagues have gone on to work for organisations such as Pearson, the Government Digital Service, Tech UK, University of Salford, HSBC, checkout and Times Higher Education.
