Denville Hall
Appeal Director
£70,000
Hybrid
Full-time
Opened in 1926 as the ‘Haven for elderly actors & actresses’, Denville Hall has been providing care for actors and members of the wider theatrical industry ever since.
Care, happiness and dignity are our core values at Denville Hall.
We are one of just two adult social care facilities in the UK that is dedicated to the support of members of the theatre dance and music professions. While some achieve notable success, there are many who do not and pursuing a career in theatre and the arts can be a precarious business.
Denville Hall already provides a range of residential care services that are tailored to individual need and wishes, which can support people over time. The addition of sheltered accommodation offers the opportunity for us to extend the length of care and support that we are able to offer members of the arts professions whom we exist to serve.
The need for sheltered housing accommodation is clear and present. Quite simply, people are living longer and like all of us, they want to be independent as possible for as long as possible.
We have the plans and all the necessary planning permission for what we anticipate will be a very successful and high-profile £12m capital appeal. Already we have support promised from some of the UK’s house-hold names and are hopeful that we will also receive support from trusts and foundations dedicated to the support of the arts.
All that is needed now is an Appeal Director to deliver on all the promise that exists and that will leave a last legacy for both Denville Hall for the next 100 years as we will celebrate our centenary in 2026.

Are you a senior Philanthropy leader with a passion for the piano, ready to take on a unique and ambitious new role?
Leeds International Piano Competition is one of the world's most celebrated music events and has launched the careers of some of the greatest pianists of our time. 'The Leeds' is regarded as a trailblazer for music competitions, among the top three piano competitions in the world.
This Director of Development opportunity is the charity's first philanthropic role of its kind. Spearheading a groundbreaking new approach to income generation, you'll help to secure the future and sustainability of an organisation with a rich and vibrant history.
Salary: £75k pro rata, open to full or part-time
Location: Leeds, London or remote
Benefits: Flexible appointment and terms can be negotiated
Culture: Life and family-friendly, open to suggested working patterns
We are able to consider candidates on either an employed or consultancy contract basis.
About the opportunity
'The Leeds' does things differently. They're a pioneering organisation when it comes to environmental sustainability (aiming to be the world's first carbon neutral piano competition by 2024) and proactively working towards greater gender equality for women.
Following a comprehensive independent review in 2023, LIPC has developed an evidence-based case for support which aims to build a £10m endowment over the next 5-10 years and diversify income streams to raise the £2.5m funding for the core costs of a 3-year programme. It's anticipated that funding will come from philanthropists in Yorkshire, London and the global piano-loving community, particularly in East Asia (Hong Kong/ Singapore) and potentially in the US.
About the role
As Director of Development, you'll provide inspirational leadership to enable and empower LIPC to develop strategic philanthropic relationships, both here in the UK and internationally.
Key tasks on your agenda will include:
* Propose and implement agreed fundraising strategy for the future endowment campaign and triennial operating costs.
* Build strong relationships with the key stakeholders, internally and externally.
* Establish personal credibility and working relationships with executive team and Trustees.
* Work closely with the Development Committee to approach and secure existing and potential new donors.
* Provide leadership and pastoral support to a Fundraising Manager and continue to build fundraising skills for the core team.
About you
You're a confident and highly-skilled philanthropy professional with a personal track-record securing high-value gifts at seven figures, working with both major donors and trusts and foundations.
You elegantly and effectively balance strategic thinking with operational hands-on fundraising, and you still get a kick from 'doing the doing'. Adept at managing and stewarding complex relationships with stakeholders and funders, you bring people together towards a shared vision and common goals.
We're looking for a talented and nurturing leader, who works with emotional intelligence and nuance when it comes to collaboration with individuals and teams at all levels.
We'll need you to be able to demonstrate and articulate a passion for the piano and the power of music to transform lives. If you are feeling inspired and motivated by what you've read, then we'd love to hear from you.
To apply, please send a copy of your profile or CV in the first instance to Amelia Lee at Charity People.
Deadline: 9am on Thursday 5th April
Interview: dates to be confirmed
We would encourage you to make contact as soon as possible if you are interested.
Charity People actively promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion. We match charity needs with the skills and experience of candidates, irrespective of age, disability (including hidden disabilities), gender, gender identity or gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation. We do this because we know greater diversity will lead to even greater results for the charities we work with.
The Wiener Holocaust Library is one of the world's leading and most extensive archives on the Holocaust, the Nazi era and genocide. The Library's unique collection of over one million items includes published and unpublished works, press cuttings, photographs and eyewitness testimony.
This year we celebrate our 90th birthday.
The Library has its origins in the work of Dr Alfred Wiener, who campaigned against Nazism during the 1920s and 30s and gathered evidence about antisemitism and the persecution of Jews in Germany.
We have a consistent track record of being able to generate the voluntary income needed on an annual basis in support of our core work, but we recognise that with additional resource we can achieve much more to both secure the long-term future of the Library and enhance our work.
This new role has been established to lead and implement the engagement strategy with both individual and organisational donors that builds a sustainable pipeline of philanthropic support to maintain and extend the work of the Wiener Holocaust Library and to secure its legacy for future generations in combating hate.
While the Library has a commendable track record for restricted funding, there is a strong need to increase unrestricted funding, which requires that we are effective in achieving greater diversity in our income streams and the donor constituency.
Our potential reach extends beyond the UK and our track record to date includes successfully engaging with U.S. funders, which is a foundation that can be built upon.

The role
The Programme and Evaluation Manager organises our music programmes: ongoing workshop series in detention centres and other settings, performances, special projects. So the role sits at the very centre of our work. Working closely with the Artistic Director, you will make Hear Me Out’s artistic programme a reality.
The main part of the job is to co-ordinate programme activities. This means you would need to:
- Liaise with settings, partners, artists and colleagues
- Match, book and support our artists
- Organise a mass of artistic and practical detail
- Work directly with people with lived experience of detention and asylum
- Understand the context and purpose of the work and what’s needed to make it succeed
We’re committed to evaluating our work. We want to know what difference it makes and what we can do better, so we ask participants to tell us what they think, and collect this data as we go along, to build up a picture of our impact. Organising this is an important part of the job. You’ll also lead some evaluation activities, such as focus groups with participants.
You’ll be the main point of contact for Hear Me Out’s freelance Associate Artists, supporting and supervising them as they lead music projects with adults and children, organising artist care and development activities, and helping bring people with lived experience into our artistic team.
Our programme is bigger than it has ever been, it has changed dramatically in the last few years in response to new challenges thrown up by the immigration system and we expect it will keep changing. So there will be lots of scope for you to make changes and develop new work.
This is a special opportunity to work join a supportive, dynamic team delivering extraordinary work.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone with strong people skills and equally strong organisational skills. For the music-making to have its intended impact, you will need to have a real eye for fine detail, and lots of sensitivity and awareness of people and their needs, whether they are people going through the immigration system, or managers in detention centres and asylum hotels.
You’ll know something of our context, or be able to learn that quickly. You’ll be skilled at communicating with artists, colleagues and partners to ensure we have a shared, realistic plan. You’ll understand how the detail of artistic planning feeds through into outcomes. And you’ll be able to evaluate those outcomes in a systematic way.
We are a small team, and most of us work part-time. You’ll need to work independently, co-operate and communicate consistently, and adapt readily when things change. You’ll need to be available on Wednesdays (our ‘team day’), and sometimes to work evenings and weekends.
Hear Me Out is committed to diversity, and is working to bring more people with relevant lived experience into our team. We very much encourage applications from people from culturally diverse backgrounds, applicants with disabilities or neuro-diverse conditions, and people of different ages, gender, sexual orientations and socio-economic backgrounds. We very much encourage applications from people with personal experience of immigration detention, or the asylum process, or immigration enforcement. If you have programme experience and also this kind of lived experience, we would especially love to hear from you.
