Job description
Barnardo's is a 150-year-old charity on a journey to transform children's social care. As part of our 10-year corporate strategy, Barnardo's has committed to becoming a digital organisation. The Digital and Technology team (also known as #futurebarnardos) is part of the Strategy & Performance group. Our team is responsible for leading a transformation of the whole organisation, and beyond it the whole children's health and social care sector - inspiring it to take a user-centric, data-driven approach to all our operations, products and services, and building up iteratively from small beginnings to big ideas.

Our goal is simple: to provide better social care, so that more children and families have better outcomes. Along the way we will make sure our staff are equipped and empowered to provide even better support, local government sees us as visionary leaders, and our charitable donors are inspired to be even more generous in supporting us.

We welcome applications from women, BAME and LGBTQA+ people, people with both visible and non-visible disabilities, and neurodivergent people, as we recognise that these people can be under-represented in our sector. Given the nature of our work, it is imperative that we ensure the widest view possible as we build our products and services.

To learn more about the team we are building, please read our blog post .

As a service designer, you will design the end-to-end journey of a service. This helps a user complete their goal and Barnardo's achieve its expected outcome. Your work may involve the creation of, or change to, transactions, products and content across both digital and offline channels provided by different parts of the charity.

Key responsibilities:

You will:

* Develop new or iterated services to meet user needs, based on evidence gathered from a variety of existing and new sources, including primary research, existing evidence and organisational goals
* Be trusted to make good decisions and recognise when to ask for further guidance and support
* Focus relentlessly on the user need, and ensure every aspect of product development is user-centric
* Identify where separate interactions with children's social care should act as one service that meet that need

Key activities:

You will:

* Work on defined problem statements and design challenges throughout the product lifecycle, with particular responsibility for the early stages (discovery and alpha)
* Work in an autonomous fashion, empowered to make key decisions, as part of a multidisciplinary product team including users
* Analyse failure within services and identify root causes for that failure
* Identify opportunities for cost reduction and improvement within an existing service
* Understand the existing supporting system of a service and design targeted improvements to that system to accommodate the new service - both digital and process base
* Collaborate on designs with analysts and developers
* Welcome the constructive criticism of their work and be able to constructively review the work of others
* Contribute to the development of design concepts
* Interpret evidence-based research and incorporate this into your work
* Represent Barnardo's internally and externally (eg conferences, meetups, blogs, interviews etc.)

This role can be based in any of Barnardo's regional offices, as outlined in the job description, with regular travel to our digital hub in central London.

Barnardo's believe in creating equality of opportunity in the workplace and supporting people to manage their work-life balance; we are therefore are open to offering flexible working arrangements

When completing your application please refer to your skills knowledge and experience in relation to the Person Specification, Job Description and Additional Information document. This should be done with an understanding of the context of the service described.
