Trustee Vacancy – (volunteer role to bring skills in construction and property management)
Bede House, Bermondsey, London SE16 2JW
Bede House Association (Bede) are seeking a new trustee with experience at a strategic level of construction and property management. We are a thriving, highly respected charity serving local people in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and across the London Borough of Southwark since 1938. Our work supports victims of domestic abuse, young people aged 8-19, individuals with learning disabilities and isolated seniors. These services reach over 2,000 people every year. Your role on our Council will enable you to help transform lives in some of Britain's most disadvantaged communities.
Bede has an annual turnover of over £1.2 million, employs 45 staff and benefits from the services of many volunteers. We operate from two nearby buildings: our fully-owned administrative offices, Bede House, and our leased community hub, Bede Centre. Construction is planned to begin this year on our New Bede Centre which will replace our existing building. Southwark Council is constructing the new Centre as part of their regeneration of the Abbeyfield Estate (adjacent to Southwark Park) and is meeting all the construction costs. Heads of Terms have been agreed on a 125-year lease and a fundraising campaign has already secured over half the funds needed to purchase it when the New Bede Centre opens in 2022.
Bede is governed by a voluntary Council of trustees, all of whom contribute to the charity’s overall governance. Day to day management of Bede is carried out by our experienced Director and Senior Management Team, including our Facilities and IT Manager. Your skills and experience will be key when the trustees consider all the cycles within the construction process of the New Bede Centre, including building contracts, leases, construction technology, leadership skills, planning process, business models, cost plans, viability proposals, design team management, and property management. A job description and person specification are attached.
If you are inspired by the work that Bede does and can commit to Bede Council’s eight Wednesday or Thursday evening meetings a year (including the AGM), plus occasional meetings or conference calls during the day, then please send your CV to Gwen Green. An informal discussion about the role can be arranged with the Director on request.
More information about Bede is on our website and in our latest annual report – links to these are in the job description and person specification.
Formal interviews will be held on May 21.
