Managing Editor

Central London • £40,000 - £45,000 (commensurate with experience)+ Benefits

The Biochemical Society is one of the largest learned societies in the UK biosciences, dedicated to advancing the molecular biosciences that underpin and explain the essential processes of life.

We are seeking a hands-on, experienced editor to take charge of editorial development, encompassing content strategy and workflows, for a subset of the Portland Press portfolio. The successful candidate will have a relentless commitment to author service and article turn-around times as a key part of the role will be copyflow management (including via an external vendor supporting peer review) to ensure KPIs are met. Strategy to diversify the inbound content is also paramount, while ensuring support for and engagement with the current authorship and audience. The post holder will work with Editorial Boards to develop and implement content strategies, and will manage relationships with scientific Editors in order to drive submissions from around the world. Reporting to the Publisher, this role needs to deliver at pace, and presents an opportunity to drive growth and be part of the Biochemical Society at a time when we, as a learned society publisher, are transitioning publishing models towards open access.

Applicants would need to be qualified in the biosciences*, be skilled communicators and have relevant experience, ideally in STM publishing. The role involves some travel, including internationally.
*Masters or PhD level is preferred, but degree qualification is a minimum requirement.

Please send a CV and Cover Letter.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
