Job Title: Employment and Integration Adviser
Language Requirements: Fluent in English. Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Tigrinya, Amharic, Kurdish, Somali, or Turkish speaking desirable.
Reports to: Programme Manager
Location: Currently working from home due to Covid. Based at main office in Aldwych, London, with travel to various regions of London (Zones 1-5).
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week. Occasional evening/weekend work required (time off in lieu provided).
Founded in 2015, Breaking Barriers is a fast-paced, start-up charity with a mission to help refugees in London gain the knowledge, confidence and experience to secure stable and fulfilling employment in their new home. We offer effective and flexible employment support in direct partnership with businesses that help refugees secure work, progress into better jobs, and successfully integrate into UK society. We have a unique approach, working with corporate partners to help refugees develop careers that match their skills, experience and aspirations.
Since Breaking Barriers’ inception in 2015, we have grown to support in excess of 500 refugees per year and have ambitious plans to expand this as part of our strategic plan. We concentrate on getting things done in a flexible environment where everyone is encouraged to take ownership and contribute. We are a team of over 40 employees supported by several hundred volunteers, who are all driven and committed to helping London’s refugee community. You will take on significant responsibility in this role, managing a full caseload and delivering quality support to 35-45 clients. This involves assessing the opportunities available to each individual, helping them set goals and drawing up support plans to support them into employment, training, or education. You will work with clients online and by phone, as well as in person when it is safe to return to face-to-face delivery and monitor their progress towards goals. Complementary support will be delivered through our volunteers who are trained in delivering employment advice, and you will book weekly appointments for clients, allocating time slots according to availability and the volunteer’s specialty.

1. Manage a caseload of clients
- Take responsibility for managing and delivering quality support to a caseload of 35-45 clients.
- Work with clients to assess available opportunities and draw up support plans to support them into employment, training, or education outcomes.
- Ensure clients who have lower levels of English and/or IT skills can join appropriate Education classes, both within Breaking Barriers and externally.
- Monitor clients’ progression towards their goals and provide monthly written updates on progress and agreed actions.
- Look into alternative approaches and solutions where clients are not progressing towards their goals.
- Meet clients remotely (and in person when face-to-face delivery resumes) and have contact by phone and email as required, providing guidance in an easily understood manner.
- Building relationships with staff at other organisations, and signposting/referring clients to other types of support (e.g. housing or mental health support) when their needs fall outside of Breaking Barriers’ remit.
- Share knowledge and learnings with the rest of the Employment team.
2. Employment Support
- Deliver employment advice and guidance through online support and in person at one or more of Breaking Barriers’ delivery centres across London (as required, depending on Covid-19 government guidelines and restrictions).
- Carry out monitoring and evaluation in relation to client support, ensuring that clients on your caseload complete impact surveys in a timely manner.
- Where relevant, assist a Senior Employment and Integration Adviser in managing Breaking Barriers’ delivery centres.
- Coordinate with volunteers and book appointments for clients by phone and email on a weekly basis, matching clients and volunteers by availability and specialty.
- Create detailed briefings for volunteers to help them structure their appointments. Supervise and act as a point of contact for around 15 skilled volunteers, ensuring they are supported to deliver advice and guidance to a high standard.
3. Administrative Work
- Ensure that all paperwork and online records are completed accurately and in time for reporting deadlines.
- Update the Breaking Barriers database, keeping accurate records of client details, support provided during appointments, client progress and planned next steps.
- Record summaries of clients’ appointments to ensure that accurate records are maintained.
- Stay on top of internal communications and emails to ensure no opportunities for clients or deadlines are missed.
4. Cross-Organisational Responsibilities
- Work and communicate with other teams at Breaking Barriers (e.g. Education, Corporate Partnerships, and Volunteer teams) to provide clients with the support they require.
- Take part in meetings both with the Programmes team and the wider organisation, sharing ideas and feedback.
- Take up opportunities for training and development provided by different teams within the organisation, so that new skills are being learned and knowledge is being shared across the organisation.
- Support with additional activities as required both within the Programmes team and the wider organisation.

Although Breaking Barriers staff are currently working from home, when we return to face-to-face support this position will require the ability to travel regularly within London and occasionally within the UK. Occasional working outside of normal working hours, i.e. at weekends or evenings, is required to meet client need, and time off in lieu is provided.
