Job description

Job Title:  Employment and Integration Adviser (multiple) 

Location(s):  Birmingham and Manchester (multiple in both) 

Hours:  37.5 hours per week, with occasional evening/weekend work (TOIL provided) 

Contract:  2 year fixed term 

Salary:  £23,000 - £25,000 

Reports to:  Senior Employment and Integration Adviser or Programme Manager 

Language Requirements:  Fluency in English and at least one target language is essential e.g. Arabic, Amharic, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Pashto, Somali, or Tigrinya. 

 

The Charity 

Founded in 2015, Breaking Barriers is a fast-paced, start-up charity with a mission to help refugees in London gain the knowledge, confidence and experience to secure stable and fulfilling employment in their new home. We offer effective and flexible employment support in direct partnership with businesses that help refugees secure work, progress into better jobs, and successfully integrate into UK society. We have a unique approach, working with corporate partners to help refugees develop careers that match their skills, experience and aspirations. 

Since Breaking Barriers’ inception in 2015, we have grown to support in excess of 500 refugees per year. We are really excited that we are now expanding into new regions in the UK with an exciting opportunity to expand in Birmingham and Manchester.

We are a team of 40 employees supported by several hundred volunteers, who are all driven and committed to helping London’s refugee community. Role Overview 

You will take on significant responsibility in this role, enrolling new clients, managing a full caseload and delivering quality support. This involves assessing the opportunities available to each individual, helping them set goals and drawing up support plans to support them into employment, training, or education. You will work with clients online and by phone, as well as in person when it is safe to return to face-to-face delivery and monitor their progress towards goals. Complementary support will be delivered through our volunteers who are trained in delivering employment advice, and you will book weekly appointments for clients, allocating time slots according to availability and the volunteer’s specialty. We offer a strong team environment, where your ideas and drive will be welcomed and where you as an individual can make a real difference to people’s lives. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

We are a fast-growing charity that prides itself on its flexibility and responsiveness, and as a result your responsibilities may change, develop, and grow according to the needs and development of our programmes. 

1. Manage a caseload of clients 

  • Complete enrolments to register new clients to receive Breaking Barriers support, gathering registration information and explaining Breaking Barrier’s services. You will focus on client enrolments in particular in the first 9 months of the project.  

  • Take responsibility for managing and delivering quality support to a caseload of clients, (depending on hours worked). 

  • Work with clients to assess available opportunities and draw up support plans to support them into employment, training, or education outcomes. 

  • Ensure clients who have lower levels of English and/or IT skills can join appropriate Education classes, both within Breaking Barriers and externally. 

  • Monitor clients’ progression towards their goals and provide monthly written updates on progress and agreed actions.  

  • Look into alternative approaches and solutions where clients are not progressing towards their goals.  

  • Meet clients remotely (and in person when face-to-face delivery resumes) and work in collaboration with other service providers providing complimentary support. Provide contact by phone and email as required, providing guidance in an easily understood manner.  

  • Share knowledge and learnings with the rest of the team 

​2. Delivery and Administrative Work 

  • Ensure that all paperwork and online records are completed accurately and in time for deadlines. 

  • Update the Breaking Barriers database, keeping accurate records of client details, support provided during appointments, client progress and planned next steps. 

  • Assist with effective monitoring and evaluation, ensuring that clients on your caseload carry out surveys in a timely manner. 

  • Record summaries of clients’ appointments to ensure that accurate records are maintained. 

  • Coordinate with volunteers and book appointments for clients by phone and email on a weekly basis, matching clients and volunteers by availability and specialty. 

  • Create detailed briefings for volunteers to help them structure their appointments. Supervise and act as a point of contact volunteers, ensuring they are supported to deliver advice and guidance to a high standard. 

  • Stay on top of internal communications and emails to ensure no opportunities for clients or deadlines are missed. 

3. Cross-Organisational Responsibilities 

  • Take part in meetings both with the Programmes team and the wider organisation, sharing ideas and feedback. 

  • Take up opportunities for training and development provided by different teams within the organisation, so that new skills are being learned and knowledge is being shared across the organisation. 

  • Support with additional activities as required both within the Programmes team and the wider organisation. 

 

Considerations 

Although Breaking Barriers staff are currently working from home, when we return to face-to-face support this position will require the ability to travel regularly within Birmingham or Manchester (depending on the role) and occasionally within the UK. Occasional working outside of normal working hours, i.e. at weekends or evenings, is required to meet client need, and time off in lieu is provided.
