Job description

We are working in partnership with Bridport Museum Trust, who manage the Bridport Museum, a fully Accredited Museum in the town of Bridport, Dorset, on the World Heritage Site Jurassic Coast. The Museum has a long history in the town, originally founded as an Art Gallery and Museum in 1932 when Percy Codd donated the Old Castle building on South Street to the Town Council to display his paintings. It underwent a major £1.3 million Heritage Lottery-funded redevelopment in 2016–17, and has a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, family activities, fundraising events, talks for local groups and other outreach events. There is also a learning programme, which supports local schools and community groups. It is a key player in the area’s cultural life and is a member of the Jurassic Coast Museum’s partnership. The Trust plays an active role in the cultural life of the town, supporting local events and festivals.

Bridport Museum Trust is now seeking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees. The Chair will be an inspirational individual dedicated to taking the Museum forward, leading the Board of Trustees and supporting the Museum Manager to further drive the museum’s growth and impact.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation.
  • Experience of charity governance and working with/or as part of a Board of Trustees.
  • Experience of external representation, delivering presentations and managing stakeholders.
  • Significant experience of chairing meetings and events.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and relationship building abilities, strong networking capabilities and be comfortable in an ambassadorial role.
  • Interest in and willingness to learn about the museum/cultural sector and current issues affecting it.

We are seeking an ambitious and visionary leader with a strong track record of leading organisations through change. We are open to your professional background, as long as you bring effective governance experience, and strategic thinking. Expectation of chairing Board meetings four times as year (in-person), serving as a member of the Executive Committee, which currently meets monthly (virtual), attending an annual away day, conducting monthly catch up with the Museum Managers (job-share) and exhibition openings and events. The Trust’s Chair and Board members are appointed for a four-year term and are then eligible for re-appointment for one additional term of four years.
