Job description

We have an exciting opportunity available for a Communications Assistant to join our team based in Falmer. We have a full time, permanent position working 37 hours per week and a part time, permanent position working 25 hours per week. In return, we are offering a competitive salary of £21,000 to £22,000 per annum (pro rata for part time).

About the role:

As our Communications Assistant you will support the Communications Manager in delivering high quality communications and marketing across all physical sites and online channels, to increase student awareness and engagement of Brighton Students’ Union and its activities. This role particularly focuses on content.

Key duties and responsibilities of our Communications Assistant:

- Maintain up to date knowledge on emerging trends and technologies in communication methods

- Take a lead on day to day management of the Union’s social media platforms

- Respond to student queries via social media channels and communications

- Use scheduling tools to ensure social media activity is consistent across all platforms

- Create shareable social media content in a variety of formats (including imagery and videography) and work with other members of the Communications team to ensure engaging and high quality content is produced

- Create an e-newsletter for members

- Liaise with all BSU departments to assist in marketing their services and activities

- Attend BSU events to provide live and recorded communications as requested

- Support internal teams and departments to develop blog, news and email writing skills that are in line with our tone of voice guidelines

- As directed by your Line Manager, liaise with third party providers to manage the maintenance of the website and content management system

- Train staff and students on how to use the Union’s website effectively

- Prepare analytics reports on communications as requested

- Bring fresh, current and relevant digital thinking to the implementation of the digital approach to communications and service delivery to the student market

Skills and experience required to be our Communications Assistant:

- Experience creating engaging and targeted communications for specific groups

- Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously, often with competing deadlines

- Up to date knowledge on effective communications methods to HE students

- Use of social media channels for proactive and reactive communications

- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

- Excellent organisational and project management skills with the ability to multitask

- The ability to generate positive outcomes through partnership working, including challenging the status quo or poor practice


- Degree in relevant field, or related qualification, or extensive proven experience

- An understanding of Students’ Unions and/or Higher Education sector                         

- Preparing analytics reports

- Updating website pages, and using associated software packages

- Complying to a branding policy
