Job description



Purpose of Job

To support people with dyslexia to achieve their potential by managing the BDA’s social media, website, marketing and publications and leading a growing team in developing the BDA marketing function.

Reports to

Head of Marketing (please note the manager is mainly based remotely, so you must be happy to work without daily face to face contact)

Direct reports

A Marketing Assistants, supporting marketing, fundraising, digital and design.

Hours of work

Full time, 35 hours per week.  Will include occasional evening and weekend working.


Home-based, but with some visits to British Dyslexia Association office in Bracknell expected.

Duties and Responsibilities

(to include, but not limited to)

  • Manage the marketing administrator to coordinate high quality and engaging journeys of integrated communications across all digital and print channels
  • Creating copy for online, print, press and promotional materials
  • Co-ordinate our high-profile Dyslexia Awareness Week programme and campaigns

Managing social media, website and email marketing

  • Managing social media content strategy, with a focus on forward planning and continued follower growth across all channels, and analysing digital performance
  • Reviewing all channels for engagement and interacting with audiences and  answering queries where necessary
  • Plan, create and schedule social content for all aspects of the BDA from blogs to facts and stats, focussing on three key areas of educate, engage, amplify
  • Creating and coordinating all content including articles and blog posts in the

‘News’ section of the website

  • Day to day management of central website pages including creation of core campaign materials including copywriting for events and training pages
  • Creating the content for all email marketing and monthly newsletters as well as managing the organisations MailChimp account.
  • Be responsible for sourcing, sizing and storing images appropriately, utilising the Adobe Creative Cloud to produce / edit artwork when required

Media and external relations

  • Proactively seek media opportunities across press, radio and broadcast media 
  • Coordinating all reactive PR, including press opportunities and statements
  • Answering one-off questions to fact check for journalists
  • Managing our Ambassadors and their involvement in our campaigns, maximising opportunities to amplify the charity’s message, and reviewing contracts annually

Publications & Brand Management

  • Contribute to the creation of inspiring digital content to increase engagement, including work on e-newsletters (MailChimp), blogs, social media, advertisements, brochures, booklets, fundraising activities and web pages
  • Assist with the editing and design of existing in-house branded publications and artwork when required
  • Responsible for ensuring that all branded materials meet brand guidelines and are of a consistent tone of voice
  • Acting as brand guardian across the organisation
  • Reporting into and working with the Marketing and Communications Sub-Committee regarding brand and communications needs
  • Managing Contact magazine including
    • managing content production sessions
    • sourcing and/or writing all content for each magazine
    • managing production schedule

Events and fundraising

  • Working alongside the Conference and Events team, supporting the marketing and publicity of events, as well as providing some administrative support for larger scale events
  • Working with our Fundraising Officer to support the creation of fundraising copy and content for large scale fundraising events throughout the year, such as London Marathon and Giving Tuesday


  • Representing the British Dyslexia Association in a positive and professional manner, which promotes the visions, aims and objectives of the Association
  • Being flexible, adaptable and available to take on other tasks or duties, as requested



  • Minimum of 5 years experience across several years of working in a fast-paced marketing          environment
  • Leading a team in digital and print communications
  • A good understanding of graphic design programs such as Adobe, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Canva
  • A creative approach to marketing, with an artistic eye 
  • Experience of writing compelling copy for press releases and other communications materials
  • Well organised with an ability to work under pressure and with competing
  • Previous experience of creating compelling marketing or publicity copy for social media, print and for websites; and updating as required.
  • An understanding of how people engage with brands digitally, and how to use this to improve the user experience
  • Demonstrable experience using web Content Management Systems
  • High level of IT competency inc. Microsoft Office programmes
  • Ability to proactively engage and influence a range of stakeholders at all levels, volunteers, members, and external organisations.
  • Demonstrable ability to prioritise and organise resources to deliver to time, budget and agreed quality standards
  • Self-disciplined and confident with a friendly and diplomatic manner
  • Project management skills
  • Excellent written, oral and listening communication skills
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work well within a small team, as well as within the wider organisation
  • Ability to work to targets and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, be a self-starter / motivated
  • An understanding of SEO and Google Analytics
