Job description

Founded in 1958, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) is one of the world’s leading independent research centres for international and comparative law, and hosts the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and the UK’s Modern Slavery Policy & Evidence Centre.

Through our work, we seek to improve decision-making that will help to make the world a better place and have a positive impact on people’s daily lives. Our researchers are working to address major global issues including human trafficking and migration, protection of cultural heritage, climate change, the use of artificial intelligence, and promotion of the rule of law worldwide.

Since 2018, Professor Spyros Maniatis has been leading a strategy of international growth and development of new income streams to create a truly global, sustainable future for the Institute. As a number of Trustees reach the end of their terms of office, we are recruiting for up to ten new forward-looking members who will bring expertise and energy to the development and delivery of this strategy.

We are particularly seeking to achieve a gender balance on our Trustee board and to recruit new trustees from a wide range of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. We actively welcome expressions of interest from people of all ages and backgrounds who have an interest in our work. Previous experience of being a trustee is not necessary and training will be given.

The Board of Trustees comprises eighteen members and meets four times per year. Trustees are encouraged to become involved in the work of the Institute through membership of various subcommittees overseeing research strategy, fundraising, finance, and membership.

As well as having the highest standards of integrity and honesty, we are looking for people with experience or skills in any of these areas of our work and charity management:

International Law, Comparative Law, Rule of Law, Competition Law, Modern Slavery, Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change.

Charity Management
