Job description

You will fulfil the day to day finance function for Bromley Baptist Church, supporting the delivery of high-quality, timely and accurate financial management and ensuring compliance with relevant charity regulations. 

About Us: Bromley Baptist Church is a family church in the heart of Bromley town centre that seeks to love God, love one another and love our community and the wider world. We currently have a membership of just over 150 people so the church building is used often by the church family and outsider hirers of the facilities. In terms of our day to day accounting:

  • Bank receipts: approximately 80 per month – the majority are recurring
  • Payments: approximately 50 per month – of which 35 are via purchase invoice, the balance being recurring standing orders or direct debits
  • Sage is used

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage day to day bookkeeping
  • Ensure all invoices from suppliers are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure all approved expenses from employees, ministers and volunteers are accounted for and paid promptly
  • Banking weekly cash offering and any other cash
  • From bank statements
    • Post all receipts and payments
    • Reconcile monthly and yearly transactions
  • From Sage Cloud Accounting
    • Review check and confirm postings for confirmation of accuracy
  • Prepare robust, timely and accurate management accounts, finance reports and analyses for Trustee meetings
  • Produce and submit monthly Gift Aid claims to HMRC using Donation Manager software
  • Assisting in the preparation of the annual budget
  • Assist in the Independent Examination process by providing information and data as requested by the Treasurer and Independent Examiner
  • Submit examined accounts to the Charity Commission
  • Complete administrative tasks such as filing paperwork and maintaining accurate financial records
  • Other ad hoc finance tasks as required

Key Relationships

  • The postholder will have close working relationships with the Operations and Development Manager and Administrator
  • The postholder will have a respectful working relationship with the ministry team and leaders of the various church groups

About You: We are looking for an experienced professional to join our small team. Ideally you will meet the following person specification:

Qualifications

Desirable

  • AAT Level 4 or above, preferably with membership of AAT, CIMA or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a finance role
  • At least 2 years’ experience of working in a finance role for a charity
  • Direct experience of recording and reporting on an organisations cash resources, including bank reconciliations
  • Experience of preparing and administrating supplier payments

Desirable

  • A working knowledge of Charity SORP
  • Experience of processing Gift Aid claims
  • At least 2 years’ experience of preparing management accounts
  • Experience of drafting narrative reports for non-financial colleagues

Professional Skills and Abilities - Essential

  • Proficient user of Sage Cloud Accounting
  • Analytical and numerate
  • Excellent organisational skills, with meticulous attention to detail
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Expert user of MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook

Personal Qualities – Essential

  • Collaborative and supportive with a can-do attitude and solution orientated approach
  • Proactive and conscientious, with the skills and capacity to own the role
  • You will have an understanding and sympathy with the mission and values of Bromley Baptist Church

Additional Information

Disclosure and Barring Service – the post is subject to a satisfactory DBS check

Safeguarding Training – the postholder will need to undertake Level 2 Safeguarding Training and  

References – the appointment will be confirmed following receipt of 2 satisfactory references

Annual Leave 25 days, pro rata

Probation – 6 weeks.
