Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is seeking a Head of Communications to lead our high-performing communications team. The successful candidate will lead strategic, impact-focused communications across the global organisation, working closely with our teams, partners and allies. They will bring talent, enthusiasm, knowledge and experience. This role currently manages a team of four, with three direct line reports, and reports to the Executive Director. The communications team is tasked to ensure strategic and effective communications to drive change, including managing the Resource Centre’s digital action platform.
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is a high-impact, global organization. We work closely with allies and partners to advance respect for human rights in business and hold companies accountable for abuse. We do this by empowering human rights advocates in civil society, business and governments to support bold leadership for human rights in business and strengthened corporate accountability, due diligence, and effective remedy for abuse. We also build transparency of advances, challenges, and abuse of human rights in business. We generate and share information that is relevant, reliable and up to date, and we work with advocates around the world to use this information to drive positive change that puts human rights at the heart of business.

- Lead strategic communications: Drive impact of BHRRC’s work bybuilding strategic media and digital outreach that empowers allies and influences key audiences. Work across our Global Team to develop a shared understanding of key audiences, the fast-changing context, and how communications can drive positive change. With the management team, plan and set the organisation’s communications strategy and ensure we have the right skills, knowledge, and connections to deliver it. Collaborate upstream with programme and regional leads to ensure our communications strategies help deliver the human rights impact our programmes seek with their allies
- Lead the communications team: Lead a skilled team to nurture an effective approach to communications, and digital technology. Ensure the work of the team is expertly planned and executed within budget and meets donor requirements. Deliver our performance management system throughout the year. Work with the Senior Management Team to manage operational opportunities and risk.
- Drive and execute top class communications: Work with senior management, regional and programme teams to drive an agile approach to communications, including spotting proactive and reactive opportunities, building higher-level relationships with journalists and partners, and developing tactical approaches. Play an active role in executing impact-focused communications strategies for key products and events.
- Digital action platform and technology: Work with the Digital Officer to manage the development of the Resource Centre’s leading digital action platform (a redesigned version will be launched in August 2020). Develop an understanding of audiences and ensure we deliver features that help empower them to promote human rights.
- Internal Communications: Work with the management team and others to ensure high quality communications to a remote and diverse team across 20 locations worldwide.
- Programme design and fundraising: Work upstream with our development and project teams to ensure communications, and digital technology work is effectively built into project proposals and adequately resourced; and that our monitoring of impact provides evidence of our impact.
Key competencies and attributes
Strategic Communication: At least 5 years’ experience delivering top class communications and expert understanding of how strategic communications deliver change.Strong craft in story-telling and narratives. Sharp news sense and editorial judgement.
People Manager: At least 3 years’ experience in line management. Experience in nurturing and sustaining a high performing team that thrives in a diverse, and global context. Demonstrable success in supporting project teams deploy communications strategically for impact.
Project Manager: Track record of leading and/or implementing complex communications projects including planning, execution, and evaluation. Demonstratable success planning communications for a busy organisation working closely with allies.
Relationship-building: Track record of developing strategic relationships to enhance communications and advocacy efforts, e.g. civil society partners, consultants, journalists, opinion-formers. Experience building relationships of trust and joint action with allied organisations is strongly desirable.
Digital technology: Experience using, data and technology to make change happen. Strategic foresight to sustain rapid evolution. Experience shaping digital infrastructure with developers.
Human rights, and economic justice expertise: Familiarity with social justice or human rights issues and a willingness to keep up to date. Experience communicating economic justice and human rights issues desirable.
Team player: Experience of, and commitment to, working in high-performing teams that are highly collaborative and focused on outcomes. Experience of working with colleagues remotely, and in multicultural and diverse working environments desirable.
Languages: Must be fluent in English. Additionally, French, Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, or Russian language skills would also be an asset (all languages of our digital action platform).
