Job description

The Finance Manager is responsible for the operational financial control of the organization. The post works closely with the Chief Operating Officer who leads the strategic financial control of the organization. Together they manage and oversee the financial planning, control, and operations of the international organisation, based in the UK, with subsidiaries in the USA, Australia, Germany and Colombia, and programmes around the world. They would currently manage two financial staff, and work directly to the Chief Operating Officer.

 

Details:

  • Location: UK based with flexible Remote working – occasional & weekly team day in hub in London EC2
  • Salary: UK Salary £40,000-45,000 per year (commensurate with experience), plus 5% pension contribution; 35 hour week; 24 days holiday.
  • Contract Type: Open-ended, full time.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre works to put human rights at the core of companies’ business models; to empower communities and workers to secure their rights and end abuse; and to encourage governments to create the right regulation and incentives to facilitate these outcomes. We are a global organization that is rooted in fifteen regions, and committed to cooperation with diverse actors in our movement. We have over 50 members of our Global Team based around the world who work with a rich network of human rights advocates in eight languages. Our work covers the full gamut of human rights in business, with three priority issues: labour rights; responsible resource use; and protection of civic freedoms and human rights defenders.

Our three primary global approaches to deliver this vision are:

  • Empower human rights advocates in civil society, business, and governments to stimulate bold leadership for human rights in business;
  • Strengthen corporate accountability, due diligence, and effective remedy for abuse;
  • Build transparency of the advances, challenges, and abuse of human rights in business.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational Financial Management

Responsible for accounting, management and control within the finance function, and close working with the COO on communication to the management team, Finance and Admin Committee, and Board.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant organisational policies and guidelines of UK and subsidiary branches
  • Review with the COO, all Finance Policies and Procedures, including Internal Finance Controls and develop as required
  • Oversight of subsidiary finance systems
  • Continuous review and improvement of the finance systems, and recommend and implement appropriate changes
  • Maintain key internal stakeholder relationships

UK and International Financial Accounting and Compliance

  • Oversee the Tax and other financial compliance of subsidiaries.
  • Work closely with HR to establish appropriate pay and remuneration structures for staff in multiple jurisdictions
  • Prepare the statutory accounts in accordance with Charities SORP
  • Ensure prompt statutory reporting and filing in relation to the Charity Commission, Companies House and Inland Revenue Service (US)
  • Act as primary liaison between external auditors and internal stakeholders

Management Accounting and reporting

  • Oversee project accounting budgets and systems to sustain the long term financial health of the organisation
  • Oversee the production of monthly management accounts including rolling forecasts
  • Support the production of the annual budget with the COO in collaboration with budget holders and senior management
  • Support Preparation of papers for various Management and Trustee meetings
  • Ad hoc reporting and financial modelling as required
  • Act as a Business Partner to support project managers to manage their projects effectively to meet financial targets
  • Provide financial information required by Funders
  • Act as a Business Partner to the Development Team to support the bid application process, maximise cost recovery from contracts, and timely financial reporting

Team and Line Management

  • Manage the finance function to ensure strong culture, prioritisation of projects and tasks, efficient division of work, and appropriate workloads.
  • Line manage two finance staff, and oversee their work to ensure high quality, reliable financial information. This involves regular performance management, and annual reviews

Areas for Development

  • International subsidiaries consolidation and legal compliance.
  • Development and management of new on-line finance system.
  • Treasury functions

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • CCAB qualified
  • Excellent skills in financial control systems and good knowledge of their application in the charity or not-for-profit sector
  • At least two years’ experience working in a similar role within the charity sector
  • Experience of preparation of Charity Annual Report and Financial Statements
  • Experience in filing annual returns with regulatory bodies
  • Some experience or demonstration of ability to learn tax and compliance implications in other jurisdictions.
  • Able to produce and interpret management information, make recommendations based on this information, and communicate complex financial information clearly and unambiguously to non-financial staff
  • Proven expertise in budgeting, forecasting, overseeing, and working with colleagues to reporting to funders at the project levels; working as a partner to project managers, budget holders and senior managers.
  • Strong IT skills and experience, including advanced Excel, Word, Powerpoint and accounting and payroll software
  • Proven ability to drive innovation in financial systems
  • Line or project management experience
  • Positive attitude and committed team player
  • Ability to work accurately and thoroughly with attention to detail
  • Ability to juggle competing demands to meet deadlines
