Job description

C4WS Homeless Project (registered charity, no 1189622) which provides support to people experiencing homelessness year-round, through a well-established winter night shelter in Camden, a lunchtime club, Jobs Club, mentoring scheme, hosting scheme and various other activities. We are passionate about helping people rebuild their lives after homelessness and working towards living independently.  

Our small, dedicated team is looking for a Welfare Manager, to head up the support we offer to our guests in the forthcoming shelter season.  

  • To manage and deliver all elements that fall under ‘C4WS Welfare’ including the line management of the Welfare Coordinator  

  • Winter Night Shelter  

  • Jobs Club  

  • Home from Home 

  • To work with the Director, Welfare Coordinator, Shelter Coordinator, Employment Support Coordinator, and Project Worker to achieve the successful and smooth running of the shelter    

  • To directly support the guests of shelter both during and after their stay  

  • To be present and help at shelter shifts when necessary  

  • Lead, motivate and support members of staff  

Essential  

  • A passion for working in the homelessness sector and supporting homeless people to rebuild their lives 

  • Direct and relevant experience of working with homeless people, or similarly vulnerable and/or disadvantaged groups  

  • Compassion and empathy for vulnerable adults facing homelessness   

  • Experience of staff management and of providing support and supervision   

  • Proven experience of managing a complex and changing working environment across a range of areas, with the ability to meet deadlines and respond to unplanned situations and demands  

  • Sensitive and compassionate leadership skills including the ability to make a team feel valued and supported whilst ensuring clear lines of accountability   

  • Experience of working successfully and harmoniously in a small team  

  • Experience of working with volunteers to deliver results in a charitable setting  

  • An understanding of the issues facing homeless people and the challenges they face  

  • Experience of and confidence with handling challenging behaviour calmly and effectively  

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to ensure that all guests, volunteers and staff are treated equally  

  • The ability to think ahead and be prepared for any situation that might arise   

  • An understanding of how to manage a small charity and work within the confines of a restricted budget so as to be able to effectively respond to a large demand for services  

  • Financial management experience including managing a budget   

  • Experience of fundraising (applying, negotiating and securing funding) and managing relationships with stakeholders   

  • Experience of managing petty cash both in dispensing and record keeping   

  • Knowledge and experience of advocacy and welfare support of vulnerable people  

  • Excellent oral communication skills, including public speaking  

  • Excellent written communication skills including but not limited to report writing, funding updates and letters to stakeholders  

  • Excellent administration and organisational skills  

  • Good familiarity with IT software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and Powerpoint   

  • Able to be on call on evening, weekends and overnight as and when needed   

  • Sympathetic to our Christian Ethos  

Desirable  

  • Knowledge of welfare benefits process  

  • Experience of representing an organisation publicly i.e. via the media and at events   

  • Knowledge of Camden   

Salary: £34,751 

Contract: 1 year contract subject to review and extension based on performance
