Position Description

To ensure that CAFOD has a strong and inspired campaigning presence by empowering the Catholic Community of England and Wales to influence, in a well-targeted way, decision-makers in order to bring about long-term change in the lives of the poorest and most disadvantaged communities; establishing and leading in key coalitions to make our campaigns work more effective.

CAFOD has a strong tradition of campaigning of which the organisation is very proud. This role will continue and develop our campaigning with a strong campaigns team and sitting in the advocacy, education and communications group working closely with the policy, education and communications teams. This person will also work closely with other coalitions and our international networks.

Key Responsibilities

To be responsible for CAFOD’s overall campaigning presence in the Catholic Community of England and Wales:

  • To ensure CAFOD is inspiring and engaging supporters in England and Wales to take action through setting ambitious strategies, standards for CAFOD campaigns;
  • To ensure that CAFOD’s campaigning is rooted in our policy and programmatic work, Catholic Social Teaching and current campaign trends;
  • To provide advice to the Director on campaigning priorities and external trends and activities;
  • To provide timely sign off on CAFOD’s campaigning activity.

Work closely with Leadership Teams to bring about change through CAFOD’s advocacy work:

  • To be an active member of the Advocacy Leadership Team, through which priorities for our advocacy work will be discussed and agreed; planning, budgeting, reviewing, approving and managing change and ensuring effective communication;
  • Contribute to the formulation and implementation of joint advocacy strategies across the organisation;
  • Ensure effective campaigns input and presence into the different cross-organisational advocacy working groups;
  • To be an active member of other leadership groups such as the Supporter Strategy Group which brings together all supporter facing teams.

Represent CAFOD on external coalitions, international networks and with decision makers to best affect the policy or practice change we’re seeking:

  • Represent CAFOD in external coalitions and at senior sector forums on campaigning;
  • Work with international networks on joint campaigning activities in Europe and globally;
  • To actively develop and implement external opportunities for joint working with other organisations and coalitions;
  • Represent CAFOD in meeting with decision makers and public meetings;
  • Act as a CAFOD spokesperson for media interviews.

Manage the Campaigns Team (Line and Section Management):

  • Manage the Campaigns Team in line with CAFOD’s management standards;
  • Take overall responsibility for strategic planning and review; ensure that the Campaigns Team works within a plan that provides clear objectives, priorities and monitoring mechanisms;
  • Manage the different areas of campaigns to agree short, medium and long term objectives, develop associated plans, and monitor and evaluate performance to ensure that objectives are achieved;
  • Support and mentor staff in the Campaigns Team to develop their skills and experience checking that roles, responsibilities and skills are able to meet the challenges of a changing advocacy environment;
  • Efficiently and effectively manage the team’s budget to ensure delivery of the objectives and best value;

  • Looking outward: Is astute and politically sensitive whilst acting in the interests of the poorest communities

  • Achieving results: Has a clear sense of purpose and priorities to achieve results, making sound decisions backed up by evidence and analysis, actively championing agreed decisions and stimulating a climate of innovation and fresh ideas to get results. 

Job-specific competencies

  • Proven background in campaigns work at a senior level, demonstrating analytical skills, strategic thinking, political sensitivity and ability to engage supporters
  • Demonstrated experience of people management and development
  • Proven experience of working in partnership with NGOs and other civil society organisations and networks
