Thousands of older people living in care homes receive few or no visitors. Friends for Life Bedfordshire exists to change that.
Through our befriending and group activities, we bring companionship, connection and meaningful relationships to care home residents across Bedford and the surrounding area.

About Friends for Life Bedfordshire
We are a Bedford-based charity working to address the social isolation of older residents in Bedfordshire’s care homes.
Founded in 2007, we have grown from a small local initiative to a registered charity with c90 volunteers supporting more than 30 care homes across Bedford Borough. In the last year, over 1,100 care home residents received our services.
The Role
This is a pivotal role for the charity. It is key to the delivery of our business plan and growth aspirations.
You will take ownership of fundraising and income generation, ensuring we have the resources to sustain and grow our impact.
You will lead on grant fundraising whilst also developing community and individual giving, and delivering engaging fundraising events.
This is a hands-on role in a small organisation, so you will have real ownership and visibility. You will shape our fundraising strategy and directly influence how many residents we can reach.
This role is suited to someone who is both strategic and practical — someone who can develop the fundraising strategy and the plan to deliver this, but is equally comfortable writing applications, building relationships and making things happen.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Fundraising
- Identify and secure funding from trusts, foundations and statutory bodies
- Write high-quality, compelling funding applications
- Build and manage a strong pipeline of funding opportunities
- Maintain relationships with funders, including reporting and stewardship
Community & Individual Fundraising
- Grow income through local partnerships, supporters and community initiatives
- Engage schools, businesses and individuals to generate support
- Work with Marketing, Partnerships & Activities Lead to develop campaigns that drive regular and one-off donations
- Strengthen our local supporter base and visibility
Fundraising Events
- Plan and deliver fundraising events (community and corporate), managing logistics, budgets and stakeholder coordination
- Work with Marketing, Partnerships & Activities Lead to promote events through social media and marketing platforms
- Ensure events are engaging, effective and financially successful
- Evaluate performance and improve future activity
Strategy, Compliance & Reporting
- Develop and deliver a clear fundraising strategy aligned to organisational goals
- Track performance against targets and provide insight
- Ensure all fundraising is compliant with regulations and best practice
- Represent the charity externally with confidence and credibility
About You
We are looking for someone who can take ownership of fundraising and produce results in a small, resource-constrained environment.
You will likely bring:
- Experience developing or contributing to a fundraising strategy
- Proven experience in fundraising, with a track record of generating income
- Strong experience in writing successful grant applications
- Experience of developing and growing income from community fundraising initiatives (e.g. partnerships, volunteer-led activities, individuals and events)
- Ability to build and manage relationships with funders, donors or partners
- Strong written communication skills — able to create compelling cases for support
- Ability to work independently, prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
- A proactive, resourceful approach — you don’t wait to be told what to do
- Comfortable balancing strategy with hands-on delivery

The role
We are seeking a policy and public affairs leader to drive influence, advocacy and campaigning in Wales. This high-profile role will represent the organisation at senior levels, engaging with Ministers, Members of the Senedd (MSs), officials and the media to champion speech and language therapy and those with communication and swallowing needs.
You will lead the development and delivery of policy and campaigning strategy, building cross-party relationships, shaping national campaigns and supporting members to influence both locally and nationally in English and Welsh. The role also involves planning impactful events, strengthening partnerships and acting as a key spokesperson on policy and legislative issues.
Working closely with colleagues and stakeholders, you will oversee policy development and responses, ensuring emerging legislation and policy are effectively analysed, influenced and communicated. You will also play a central role in promoting the profession, supporting members and networks across Wales and representing the organisation at a senior level to advance its strategic goals.
What we are looking for
We’re looking for a confident policy professional with strong political awareness and a passion for influencing change. Welsh speaking is desirable however not essential. The successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of health, social care and education policy, alongside knowledge of political processes, particularly within the Welsh Parliament and Government and an appreciation of the role of a professional body.
The ideal candidate will have experience of influencing policy in health, education or social care, with a proven track record in lobbying or campaigning at local or national level. You will be skilled in developing policy initiatives from research, evidence and practice, and communicating complex findings to a wide range of audiences. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator and influencer, confident in advising civil servants and politicians on sensitive matters and capable of leading or contributing to projects across a complex organisation.

About the Role

- Identify risks, issues and dependencies which are not captured by Programme Portfolio Leads. Ensure consistent risk management across projects and programmes. The role: Part-time Director

Role Overview
The Senior Community and Patient Engagement role will play a key role in building, supporting, and strengthening relationships with people living with lung conditions, carers, patient organisations, and wider community stakeholders across Europe. The postholder will ensure that patient voices are meaningfully embedded in ELF and ERS activities, including research, education, advocacy, and policy. This role requires strong organisational and communication skills, ability to manage and distrbute workload and tasks, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to inclusive, ethical, and impactful engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Community & Patient Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with patients, carers, patient organisations and professionals across Europe
- Support the development and coordination of patient advisory groups, community panels, and networks
- Ensure diverse patient perspectives are represented, including underserved and marginalised communities
- Develop innovative strategies and ways of reaching the community
Co-production & Involvement
- Facilitate meaningful patient involvement in research projects, clinical practice guidelines, educational activities, and events
- Support co-creation of materials, resources, and initiatives with patients and community partners
- Provide guidance and practical support to ensure engagement activities are accessible, inclusive, and ethical
Programme & Project Support
- Coordinate patient engagement activities across multiple projects, ensuring timelines and objectives are met
- Work collaboratively with internal teams, ERS colleagues, researchers, and external partners
- Support the evaluation and continuous improvement of engagement activities
Communication & Advocacy
- Help translate complex medical and scientific information into clear, patient-friendly language
- Contribute to the development of engagement content for websites, newsletters, social media, and events
- Support patient participation in conferences, workshops, and policy-related activities
- Plan and deliver online events for patients and the public, including programme management, technical support and content creation
Monitoring, Learning & Reporting
- Collect feedback and data to assess the impact and quality of engagement activities
- Contribute to reports, funding applications, and internal learning documents
- Share best practice in patient and community engagement across the organisation
Person Specification
Essential
- Substantial experience working in patient, community, or public engagement, preferably in health, research, or a non-profit setting
- Strong experience of delivering patient involvement, co-production, or participatory approaches
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders across cultures and countries
- Strong project management and task assignment skills with proven ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects from initiation to completion
- Sensitivity to ethical issues, confidentiality, and safeguarding in patient engagement
Desirable
- Experience working with patient organisations or people living with long-term conditions
- Knowledge of respiratory or lung health (or willingness to learn)
- Experience working in a European or international context
- Additional European language skills
- Experience evaluating engagement activities or using qualitative feedback
- Experience of organising and delivering conferences and events, ideally with a focus on patient‑facing meetings or patient conferences
- Experience in coordinating and prioritising a team’s project workload, ensuring resources are used effectively and deadlines are met
