Our policy department develops evidence-based policy to inform Government decisions related to cancer and research, communicating our views to key decision-makers. We are uniquely placed to inform political debate, and we work with Parliamentarians across the country to ensure that cancer prevention, detection and treatment remain health priorities.
The Head of Policy Development will play a critical role in overseeing policy prioritisation and development, ensuring that the department focuses on the key issues that Cancer Research UK can and should influence now and in the future, and that the highest standard of evidence is generated and presented in order to influence policy makers and politicians. You will have an excellent understanding of the policy development process with proven experience in one or more of the voluntary, medical, health and research sectors. As well as this, you'll be Politically savvy and strategically agile, and an experienced leader, having managed and motivated a professional team of policy specialists on strategically important issues.
Lead a team of policy development experts to ensure CRUK effectively develops evidence-based and timely positions to influence the policy agenda in the UK and EU.
Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders, provide expert knowledge and advice on policy issues with colleagues, including senior staff, press teams, and the public affairs and campaigns teams.
Develop and implement stakeholder strategies, building strong relationships with a range of external stakeholders to support CRUK's policy goals, including senior roles in Government, the academic sector, industry, and charities.
Effectively communicate complex policy messages to a variety of audiences through mechanisms such as meetings, presentations, written outputs, and regular media work.
Partnering with the Director of Policy to prepare the charity's positions in key and emerging areas, liaising with experts in the field and critically assessing the benefits of the charity taking a lead role in a policy versus working in partnership.
Lead decision making on commissioning policy research with emphasis on the opportunities for greatest impact, managing the budget and working across teams to deliver in a timely and cost-effective way.
Develop, and oversee implementation of, policy development team operating plans linked to organisational and department strategies, setting relevant KPIs.
Oversee team performance, reward and recognition, training and development, and talent identification.
Key Skills and Experience:
Excellent understanding of the policy development process with proven experience in one or more of the voluntary, medical, health and research sectors.
Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to build strong relationships, including with senior stakeholders.
Politically savvy with the ability to manoeuvre through complex political situations effectively and is sensitive to how people and organizations function.?
Strategically agile and future orientated, anticipating consequences and trends accurately; with the ability to create compelling strategies and tactical plans.
Commercially astute, having managed large budgets, and a background in leveraging opportunities to deliver savings.
Ability to set priorities and galvanize teams, rapidly zeroing in on what is important, creating focus by identifying and navigating roadblocks.
Excellent command skills, taking unpopular stands if necessary; while encouraging debate and thought diversity.
Experienced leader, having managed and motivated a professional team of policy specialists on strategically important issues.
