We have a number of exciting opportunities for skilled software engineers, the lead software engineer roles you must be able to take ownership of a project from inception and have proven line management/mentoring experience.

Here at Cancer Research UK, our Engineering team is expanding. We are looking for a Software Engineer with experience of React front-end, and Node or C# back-end development to help taking our digital products to the next level.? Whilst you will initially work on our Cancer Research & Innovation portfolio of products, you will over time have the opportunity to work with a variety of teams across CRUK, to create and advise on a wide range of initiatives, from the CRUK website through to marketing, event management and cancer information. We have fantastic technology professionals across all our tech teams, who are not only skilled at what they do, but also passionate about our main aim of beating cancer sooner.

Who are we?
CRUK has an ambitious approach to Engineering. Our in-house software solutions include a Content Management platform supporting multiple websites, Event and Activity Management web applications, Online Fundraising platform, Payments platform, Ecommerce and mobile apps. These are business critical systems under continual agile development, operating at scale for millions of users: cancer patients looking for information, supporters and volunteers helping with fundraising, researchers working towards curing cancer. Whilst CRUK is a complex organisation, we encourage innovation by setting up small multi-skilled product teams empowered to make decisions and prioritise their work.

What will I be doing?

* Work on taking our portfolio of Research & Innovation products to a new serverless architecture which will provide better performance and a lower maintenance overhead

* Use the latest technologies to create high-performing and accessible web applications: React, Cypress, AWS Amplify, Lambda, Fargate, CDK

* Work in a supportive and collaborative environment, where you are given the time to learn, are coached by more experienced software engineers, and play an active role in our engineering communities (JS, front-end, etc)

What are we looking for?

* Experience of building single page applications using the React ecosystem, as well as broader knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS and working with REST APIs

* Back-end development experience using Node JS or C# is an advantage

* Experience of AWS services such as Amplify and Lambda, the AWS CDK and any CI/CD tolling (e.g. AWS or GitHub Actions) is an advantage

* Experience of test-driven development using testing frameworks such as Cypress, React Testing Library, Jest is desirable

* Experience of running critical services in production is an advantage

* Experience working with agile software development methods

* Understanding and communicating complex information and concepts to technical and business colleagues, influencing others effectively

* Ability and willingness to learn
