Salary: Circa £26,000 per annum
Location: Home-based with regular travel to Greater Manchester, and less frequent travel to CRUK's office in East London

The Westminster & Local Public Affairs team communicate Cancer Research UK's policy messaging to parliamentarians in Westminster and local government across England to achieve policy change and help beat cancer sooner. Working with the Westminster & Local Public Affairs Manager and other Officers, this role is responsible for supporting Cancer Research UK's award-winning public affairs programme. The role will support the team's influencing work with Local Government, with a particular focus on:
Local tobacco control and smoking cessation policy
Influencing key opinion leaders in Greater Manchester and the North West of England
Growing our engagement with Metro Mayors
Helping to run our network of Councillor Cancer Champions.
Some of the key activity you can expect to be involved in is…
Planing and delivering a programme of influencing activity with local/regional stakeholders across England, with a focus on Greater Manchester and the North West:
Identifying and prioritise local areas and audiences for engagement, and grow relationships with these stakeholders
Developing and implement engagement plans for achieving policy change, especially in relation to local tobacco control
Tracking and evaluate activity to demonstrate impact and inform future work
Organising and attend events with key stakeholders as appropriate, including lab tours, shop visits and the Cancer Awareness Roadshow
Representing Cancer Research UK at relevant external meetings
Continuing to grow engagement activity with Metro Mayors, identifying influencing opportunities and developing relevant policy asks.
Contributing towards the ongoing management of our Councillor Cancer Champions Network, including delivering regular comms, policy actions and occasional events.
Collaborating with relevant internal teams and external organisations to ensure alignment of local influencing activity and amplification of the team's work.
Working with the wider team to plan and deliver engagement at local government conferences.
Producing a range of engaging and high-quality communications materials for local government audiences.

Demonstrable political interest and judgement, with commitment to neutrality and ability to work across the political spectrum.
Quickly analyse complex policy issues and distil for a range of internal and external audiences.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to adapt style to different audiences.
Strong organisational skills and experience of managing a complex workload, with tight deadlines and often changing priorities.
Good relationship-building and influencing skills and confidence in managing challenging stakeholder relationships, including in coalition.
Adaptable self-starter with the ability to work remotely and in a self-directed way as part of a larger team.
Understanding of structures, policies and procedures in Local Government, and knowledge of the political landscape at a regional level.
Ability to use initiative and take a solutions-focussed approach.
Ability to plan and deliver several projects at the same time, including prioritising workload and meeting competing deadlines with minimal guidance and support.
