We are recruiting a Field Operations Manager to lead our team on the ground in France. You will oversee the work of 20-30 volunteers who support thousands of refugees who are sleeping rough in incredibly harsh conditions. This is an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand experience of leading overseas humanitarian aid delivery under complex and stressful conditions. While this is a challenging position, you will be given a thorough induction and support from others who have undertaken this role. Reporting directly to the CEO you will be supported on the ground by the Field Operations Coordinator.
There are complex challenges to meeting the varying needs of thousands of refugees spread across northern France and Belgium. The people we support depend on NGOs for their day to day survival; we deliver food, clothes, sleeping bags and tents; we provide phone charging, phone and bike repairs, first aid, activities and emotional support. Candidates will need naturally strong leadership skills and have the temperament to make numerous important, compassionate decisions every day.
With a changing team of more than 500 volunteers assisting us in 2021, the relationships you build with your team will be critical to the success of this role. We have recruited some strong team leaders who are highly valued and truly live our values.
The Field Operations Manager will be required to oversee operations and be responsible for distribution of aid to refugees in challenging situations. In addition, you will run warehouse operations and logistics, including purchasing and financial management; manage and motivate groups of volunteers; liaise with other NGOs and local authorities; report to the CEO and the board on the above.
The refugee crisis is politically controversial, and the debate and sensitivity around this topic can be intense. You may be required to liaise with journalists and visiting dignitaries and an awareness of the risks and consequences of public actions and statements by our personnel is therefore necessary.
Our Ideal Candidate
The candidate needs to display evident leadership ability, a high level of organisation and the capability to act with initiative and drive in various situations. Requires a positive mental attitude with a warm, friendly persona who will motivate and enable volunteers to complete challenging jobs and coordinate service delivery. Also needs to be aware of risk management and safety issues, safeguarding and compliance. Will be required to present a collaborative attitude towards other NGOs.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities & Functions

Coordinate the work of staff and volunteers, managing volunteer motivation and expectations, and encouraging best practise and inspiring optimal behaviours. Can challenge and motivate people to approach new situations whilst recognising individual limitations and difficulties. Will enable a good working environment by mediating volunteer differences and leading by example with acceptance of various attitudes, backgrounds and cultures, recognising that each volunteer can contribute if utilised appropriately.
