Please note that this role will be home based in Scotland. You will be travelling around Scotland (mainly Edinburgh) to engage directly with MSPs and at times, parts of the UK and Northern Ireland.

We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our small but committed Advocacy team as an Advocacy & Government Relations Officer. If you’re passionate about cats, have excellent communication skills and want to speak up for cats, this role is for you!

Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity with a nationwide network of centres, volunteer-run branches and charity shops. During 2019 we helped around 191,000 cats and kittens, an average of 520 per day.

The Advocacy & Government Relations team, within the Communications Directorate, leads for the charity on influencing decision makers and those whose policies, practices and decisions affect cat welfare across the UK. The small, highly motivated team works to influence legislators (national and devolved governments), professional organisations and corporates. The team’s work has included publishing ‘Manifestos for Cats’ ahead of the general and devolved elections, launching a “Purrfect Landlords” campaign to encourage landlords to allow cats and calling for compulsory microchipping of cats across the UK. The team has recently successfully influenced the law on commercial kitten sales in England and is working with the Scottish Government to regulate cat breeding and rehoming activities.

You will work remotely within a small team, who are based at the National Cat Centre, alongside the Head of Advocacy & Government Relations, Executive Management Team, Trustees, volunteers and supporters to achieve realistic but challenging advocacy targets. You will lead on engagement with the Scottish Government and MSPs as well as planning and policy development ahead of 2021 devolved elections in Scotland. You will be monitoring parliamentary activity daily, conducting online research and responding to external and internal emails, preparing position statements and responses to external policy developments. You’ll be developing public-facing charity campaigns including online resources, organising events and delivering presentations.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong self-motivation. A people person with lots of initiative who is able to work independently and collaboratively with an ability to influence and inspire people from all levels including government agencies, politicians, other NGOs and volunteers. You will have excellent attention to detail; fantastic organisational and analytical skills; the ability to prioritise work and set and meet deadlines to achieve agreed performance targets. You will either have a degree or at least one year’s proven experience (either paid and/or voluntary) in political and/or public affairs, influencing, policy analysis and campaigns. You will need a comprehensive understanding of government politics and the structure and processes of external agencies. You should also be a confident speaker and an excellent writer.
