Job description

Location is flexible, although applications from Scotland, Wales, NI or from the North of England especially welcome.

Travel will be required on an ad hoc basis, which may be outside normal working hours.

Be part of a small and dynamic team at the Centre for Homelessness Impact, designing and delivering digital products that support people to use data and evidence to end homelessness.

The Interaction Designer works with the product team to design and prototype new ways of making evidence accessible and useful.

WHY IS THIS ROLE IMPORTANT FOR THE CENTRE’S WORK

Our mission is to 'end homelessness with evidence. This is our North Star. We understand that we can only create a society in which any experience of homelessness is rare, brief and non-recurring by giving policy makers and people on the ground the tools and evidence of what works.  We are looking for someone to join our newly formed multi-disciplinary product team, to lead the user experience design across our existing tools and website, as well as prototype new online products and services.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

  • Design and continually improve the Centre’s digital products and services, starting with the existing evidence tools.
  • Champion and implement world-class design and user-experience across our products and platforms.
  • Contribute to a culture of rapid iteration to test ideas, and assumptions with real users.
  • Providing in-depth knowledge of the users’ needs and championing these in the delivery of our data and evidence digital products and the services
  • Work across all parts of the design process: user research, concept development, prototyping, UX + UI, collaborating with development partners, and internal subject matter experts.  
  • Be able to see your work live and out in the world – our tools are used by practitioners, policy-makers and researchers every day. 
  • Get your teeth stuck in complex challenges, and have autonomy to invent and envision new tools and pioneering offers that help end homelessness by better use of evidence.
  • Work alongside a team of passionate people with deep expertise in data science, systems change, lived experience of homelessness, design, economics and policy-making.  

YOUR EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • UX / Interaction design degree or course equivalent – we also welcome applications from those who are self-taught.  
  • Expertise in prototyping – from live online experiments to in-person testing using sketches and mockups. 
  • Demonstrated ability in applying the principles of visual design (colour, type, grid, hierarchy) to screen-based interfaces.
  • Can think conceptually (and can possibly quickly sketch the concept rather than document it!)
  • You’re skilled in a range of interactive tools for visual and digital design, as well as prototyping, such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, etc. 
  • You are passionate about uncovering user needs, navigating the needs of multiple internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities, and translating them into better products and services.
  • You’re comfortable conducting rapid, incremental and iterative user research and prototyping to test hypotheses and assumptions
  • You are able to use insights from ongoing user research to identify product improvements and unmet needs. 
  • Understanding of agile and lean ways of working  
  • As comfortable collaborating as you are originating ideas and content autonomously and acting self-directed. 

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Some dev skills or understanding of front-end development for prototyping 
  • Experience designing in and using Webflow or similar no-code platforms
  • Can simplify things and avoids jargon
