Nature Recovery Corridor - Community Volunteer & Training Coordinator

Temporary (October 2021-March 2023) – Full time (35 hours per week)

We currently have an exciting vacancy for a Community Volunteer & Training Coordinator to join our Conservation Education and Engagement team working specifically on the Nature Recovery Corridor (NRC) Project. This project is funded by the Government's Green Recovery Challenge Fund. The fund was developed by Defra and its Arm's-Length Bodies. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England, the Environment Agency and Forestry Commission.

The role:

  • Collaborate with Nature Recovery Corridor Project Manager, Volunteer Manager, external organisations and community groups to identify opportunities for community volunteering and develop appropriate volunteer roles.
  • Recruit, train and supervise a team of community volunteers, developing their roles and the training programmes required to deliver to them.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision for community volunteers, ensuring standards are maintained, they have the resources they need and that any issues are dealt with before they become problems.
  • Ensure all volunteers are kept up to date with project and zoo news and support the community volunteers to engage with the already existing volunteer Facebook page, volunteer noticeboard, newsletters and other methods.
  • Develop and maintain systems for tracking volunteer activities and training (using existing systems where appropriate) and work with the Conservation Social Scientist and Nature Recovery Corridor Project Manager to evaluate our community volunteer programmes.
  • Ensure our delivery is cost effective and minimising wastage by tracking the project budget related to the volunteers.
  • Ensure that all volunteering activities are safe and appropriately risk assessed, liaising with Health and Safety Advisors as appropriate.
  • Manage the Nature Recovery Corridor Trainees and oversee their programme of training and mentoring support including regular 1-2-1 meetings and keeping track of their progress regarding training.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience of working with and supervising volunteers on a regular basis is essential, including the administration of rotas, supervision of volunteers and managing recruitment processes. Experience of working with young people or youth volunteers is also desirable.
  • Managing people: Experience of supervising a team and managing the work of others.
  • Experience of delivering training sessions, preferably in a visitor facing environment and to a wide range of participant groups, especially those who face additional barriers to learning.
  • Organisational skills: Excellent time management, administration and planning skills, with substantial administration experience, including the production of reports and dealing with personal data.
  • Interpersonal skills: Excellent diplomacy and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively under own initiative and as part of a team, to work under pressure with positive attitude and also to enthuse and engage others.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a range of community organisations, particularly from the voluntary and adult learning sectors.
  • Experience of working in a large public facing organisation, excellent customer service skills and practical knowledge of developing public facing roles is essential.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, demonstrated through a wide range of experience presenting to different audiences and delivering training. Including good written skills and ability to develop resources.
  • Practical understanding of some of the barriers people face to learning, volunteering and employment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with sensitive issues.
  • IT skills: Skilled in the use of all key Microsoft packages and use of digital technologies for public engagement.
  • Subject knowledge: The post holder would ideally have some knowledge of conservation. This is likely be demonstrated by relevant degree and/or experience of working within a zoo, conservation organisation or similar environment.
  • Full driving license.

The hours of work are 35 hours per week, worked 5 days over 7 to ensure contact with weekend volunteers. Evening work may be required to meet the needs of the project for which time off in lieu will be given.

The salary for this role is £21,125.00 per annum and in addition we offer a range of amazing benefits .
