CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Posted by Union of Kingston Students

Location Kingston, Surrey, Greater London
Permanent
Category Senior Management
Sectors Education

Are you an inspirational leader with proven success in supporting young people to positively transform their lives?

Job Description

About us
Union of Kingston Students exists to support, empower and enrich the lives of all students at Kingston University. We are a registered charity with student members elected across a range of roles to lead the organisation, supported by a team of permanent staff who are responsible for the operation and management of the union. Kingston University is a dynamic institution committed to widening participation in higher education and the students’ union works collaboratively as a critical friend to build an inclusive and broad-based environment for the 15,000+ students whose lives are transformed during their time in Kingston. Our membership consists of students from a wide range of academic interests that range from the sciences and business to nursing, art and design. Our students also take part in a number of activities with us, such as international volunteering trips, free and independent academic advice and student led campaigns.

About the role
Kingston University, located in Kingston Upon Thames, is situated not quite in the country and not quite in the city, but somewhere nicely in between. We are seeking to recruit a new CEO to see the union through a period of growth and development, with a passion for youth culture. Maintaining a positive relationship with Kingston University, and supported by an ambitious and productive staff team, you will be leading the union to engage our student members more deeply with our campaigns, activities and events. You’ll get to work with some pretty amazing people within Kingston and beyond, you’ll lead a strong and committed staff and volunteer team and you'll get to work alongside a pro-active trustee board. Supporting, empowering and enriching the student experience is more than a catch phrase, as the students sit at the centre of everything we do.

About you
You’ll be applying for this role because something about it fascinates you and fuels your desire to create real social change. If you haven’t worked in the student union sector before, you’ll be wondering why. If you already do, you’ll know this is a great opportunity. You will be an inspirational leader with a passion for staff and student development and a track record of working with diverse young people in an educational, community or charitable setting. You will have very strong people skills and the ability to influence at the highest level, alongside having experience of strategy and organisational development. You relish supporting others to overcome challenges while enabling them to learn more about themselves and the world. Caring about the importance of the little interactions that have a large impact on the lives of students, you should care that students are people and not just numbers, while at the same time understanding how to see the forest from the trees. You will understand that you’ll have to mould yourself to the way that Kingston students want their union to deliver, rather than changing the union to deliver what others think a union should be. Thinking out of the box, a strong ability to listen and visible sense of follow through will greatly complement the role.
As a diversity conscious organisation we are keen to encourage applications from BAME candidates who are underrepresented at the senior levels of our organisation. Though this role is advertised as full time, we are also committed to work/life balance and wellbeing, and would consider flexible part time working for the right candidate.

If you would like an informal conversation about the role, please contact Nick Posford his contact details can be found on the recruitment information pack.

To apply, please send a copy of your CV and a supporting statement showing how you meet the person specification by 9am on Monday 5th June 2017.

Interviews will be held in the week beginning 12th June.
