Job Description

Children's Support Worker -Asylum Support and Immigration Resource Team (ASIRT)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to make a significant contribution to the lives of vulnerable children and young people who are subject to immigration control in Birmingham and the surrounding areas.

ASIRT has many years’ experience of working with families to secure their legal status and
improve their social situation and welfare. Our children are disadvantaged in many ways,
including: uncertainty about their future and ability to remain in the UK, poverty, inability to access sufficient food, clothing or other basic necessities. Some families will face many moves and family separation resulting in loss of school, social networks and mental distress.

As part of a small team at ASIRT you will enable children and young people to negotiate routes to support, advise them of their rights and advocate on their behalf to help improve their situation.

You will also be responsible for running a support group, tailored to the needs of the young people involved, to address issues of isolation and self-esteem whilst promoting personal and social development.

We are looking for a highly motivated, child-focused individual with a strong track record of working with children/young people and a commitment to child-led projects. You will have a commitment to equality and justice, will understand the impact of asylum and immigration laws on young people and families, and will value and promote the rights of asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants.

Ability to work flexibly including some evening and weekend working is essential.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and all convictions, spent or unspent must be declared. An Enhanced DBS check will be undertaken.

This post is supported by BBC Children In Need.

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
