Introduction to role
We are seeking a Venue & Buildings Manager to help provide effective stewardship and management of our wonderful and busy Grade II* listed church building and room hire business.
Inspire Saint James Clerkenwell is a Church of England church with two services (11am and 4pm) and a congregation of around 200 adults and 80 children. The congregation is vibrant and diverse and passionate about sharing the good news of Jesus.
A large proportion of the church’s income is generated by hiring out the crypt, church and accompanying spaces to external clients. Our ability to rent out these spaces supports the church’s broader mission and helps maintain the building for future generations. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the building and the room hire business and see that the work they do supports and facilitates the ministry of the church. They will ensure that the resources we have are best utilised and that health and safety and legal obligations are fulfilled in relation to the building. This is a client facing role, where you are required to provide a professional service to all who visit the church and the variety of clients looking to use the venue as an event space.

What you’ll be working on:
Crypt Business Management

Buildings Management

Devise, oversee and operate an annual schedule of maintenance for the Church building

Organise, schedule and supervise regular (annual, bi-annual) maintenance contracts for key infrastructure

Be the contact point for ad-hoc maintenance issues, either responding directly or organising appropriate contractors or volunteers

Project manage new developments and projects to improve the facilities and other aspects of the Church building

Liaise with health & safety consultants to develop and implement Church building policies
4. General Terms:
Location: The post will be based in the office at Inspire St James Church, EC1R 0EA, but we are open to hybrid working arrangements.
Hours: This role is provisionally 40 hours per week but we are open to discussing the possibility of reduced hours, job-shares, flexible start and finish times or compressed hours.

Reporting into, and working closely with, the Strategic Programme Managers of both dioceses, you will take responsibility for providing specific financial reconciliations, monitoring and reporting against the Strategic Development Fund (SDF) and Diocesan Investment Programme (DIP) funding received by the Diocese of Winchester and the Diocese of Portsmouth from the Church of England (Archbishop’s Council).
A key aspect of the role will involve financial planning and modelling for future DIP bids. SDF/DIP funding is given for projects within the dioceses that help to achieve their strategic objectives. The role also involves some historic analysis to ensure expenditure is correctly coded to the right project from previous funding.
In this Strategic Programmes Finance Officer role, you will:
- Support the Strategic Programme Managers, liaising with the Finance Team, drafting, costing, and modelling of financial information for future funding/grant bids, ensuring cost recovery for overheads and staff time is included on all projects.
- Prepare regular financial reports for the Strategic Development Team and senior leadership on the financial progress and outcomes of spend to date, ensuring transparency and accountability of the funds received for the various SDF/DIP projects.
- Ensuring any transactions for overheads or contributions to core costs are recorded accurately for costs incurred by SDF/DIP or shared by the WDBF/PDBF.
- Providing information to the Finance Team regarding projects as part of month or year-end processes.
- Support with the preparation of financial reports to Church of England on the funding spend to date at required intervals.
- Review of spend to date on Xledger vs spend expected by SDT to includes comparisons for projects, spend against budget and reconciliations moving forwards.

Job Description
As the Finance Officer, you will be responsible for overseeing various financial aspects within our organisation and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. This role will require a strong understanding of gift aid compliance, legislative changes, and financial account management. Additionally, you will act as the subject matter expert for finance systems and serve as a backup for the Finance Manager when necessary.
The Finance Officer is part of the All Souls staff team supporting the church's ministry, being part of team fellowship and prayer groups. The staff, church officers and wider church family work together to deliver our vision and, as we do so, we can live out our Christian beliefs in every aspect of the daily life of the church. As a senior member of the staff team, you will play a full part in the life of the Church, including weekly staff fellowship and prayer groups, occasional attendance at the Prayer Gathering and on occasions representing the church externally.
Responsibilities
- Accurately submit gift aid claims to HMRC for all charities under our organisation, ensuring adherence to regulations and guidelines.
- Keep abreast of legislative changes from HMRC related to gift aid and ensure all charities comply with the latest requirements.
- Oversee bank and investment accounts, liaising with banks and ensuring smooth information flow between the bank and charity trustees. Prepare monthly reconciliations for active bank accounts, SOLDO cards, Credit cards etc.
- Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for finance systems, overseeing the testing and implementation of new giving platforms, and providing setup and training for the team.
- Manage and train the Finance Admin Assistant to maintain a high standard of performance and development within the team.
- Be able to represent Finance in meetings when the Finance Manager is unavailable.

We are praying for a talented Director of Finance, Property and IT to join our Leadership Team. You will be inheriting a skilled and diverse team across the finance, property and IT functions, with the possibility to grow this team, as needed, to fulfil your responsibilities.
