Citizens Online is a UK charity committed to researching, addressing and promoting the issues of digital inclusion. In collaboration with a wide range of partners, they have delivered digital inclusion projects across the UK since 2000.
Living during lockdown has demonstrated to everyone how important digital skills and technologies are to make our lives easier. But there are 9 million adults in the UK who can’t use the internet, with a significant number across East and West Sussex.
We manage the Digital Brighton & Hove project and are looking to extend reach across East and West Sussex. We are working in partnership with a number of Local Authorities and voluntary groups to support people who lack essential digital skills or access to the internet. This project will coordinate and deliver essential digital skills provision to people who lack the skills and confidence to use digital technology. As well as helping local organisations source and distribute digital technology and connectivity to those without it.
The Digital Champion Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the successful delivery of digital inclusion support services. They will recruit, train and manage Digital Champions, building a remote, Digital Inclusion Network across Sussex, primarily in areas outside of Brighton & Hove where there is already good provision. The project aims to deliver digital inclusion support services through a number of activities, including:
- Providing technology and connectivity to vulnerable people who are offline through a local digital device loan scheme
- One-to-one digital skills support for new learners provided both remotely and face-to-face by a team of volunteer Digital Champions
- Collating and sharing signposting resources and guides hosted online
- Sharing best practice across the network through newsletters and regular network meetings
The role will require working in close partnership with the local councils, social care and health providers, local housing providers and other community organisations.
You will need to have experience in: project coordination, recruiting and managing volunteers and working in the community. You will have excellent people skills and be comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds. You will be enthusiastic about digital technology and the benefits it can bring to society.
The role of Digital Champion Coordinator is to:
- Recruit, train and support a team of volunteer Digital Champions. Their role is to help people to get online (both through remote and face-to-face support).
- Train and support frontline staff and volunteers of key local service providers to become Digital Champions, promote digital inclusion and improve their own digital skills (mainly in group learning environments, including online).
- Work with local community organisations to identify opportunities to deploy digital champions and embed support within the local community.
- Coordinate the rolling-out of a Sussex Tablet Loan Scheme, ensuring that tablets are distributed to those most in need and assisting with securing additional funding for such projects.
- Work closely with the Community Digital Champion to ensure that tablets are set up with relevant apps, shortcuts etc.
- Ensure effective triaging and referral system for incoming requests for support through the phone helpline and inbox.
- Collate and share digital guides and signposting resources for local partners (e.g. online safety, getting started with WhatsApp, accessibility needs).
- Share learnings, best practice and challenges across the network by organising regular local remote network meetings.
- Identify and promote relevant digital inclusion activities in the area, using case studies to highlight the social inclusion impact.
- Use targeted marketing to motivate excluded groups and individuals to use training, support and access.
- Proactively collaborate with local partners to ensure that relevant support services are matching user needs.
- Galvanise local partners to recognise and apply for local funding opportunities that may bring further digital resources to the area.
- Monitor project activity through data gathering, using the Digital Champions Network project management tool and collating case studies.
- Report monthly on local project performance.
