About us

Bridge House Estates (BHE) is a 900-year old historic charity of which the City of London Corporation is Trustee. BHE has remained vital to London over the years and today its primary purpose is to maintain and support five of London’s most iconic Thames Bridges. During the past 25 years, our vision has expanded to tackle social and economic divides across the capital. Today we still maintain our bridges, but via our funding team, the ‘City Bridge Trust’, we distribute approximately £25m each year to support other charitable causes. Collaborating with civil society, foundations, policy makers and businesses, we harness the combined experience of local communities and partners to build a fairer, more inclusive London.


BHE has recently undertaken an extensive Strategic Governance Review to look at how the governance and management of BHE could be enhanced, to ultimately increase the impact and reach of the charity’s activities for the public benefit and to model good practice.


Following a recent organisational re-design, an exciting opportunity has now arisen for an ambitious and driven Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join the newly established BHE Leadership Team and support the charity in this exciting journey.


Job Summary

Working closely with the Managing Director of BHE and as a key member of the BHE Leadership Team, the COO will provide strategic leadership and direction across the charity combining organisational planning and operational management. You will lead and oversee the charity’s programme of business transformation, strategy & development, change management, governance risk management, equity, diversity & inclusion and impact and learning.


You will also be responsible for overseeing the delivery of the charity’s primary object (the maintenance and support of the five Thames bridges); leading the implementation of the relevant processes to ensure that the City Corporation, as the charity’s trustee and provider of choice, provides the appropriate level of support to BHE, and in agreement with the BHE Board, commissioning Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with relevant departments across the City Corporation. You will also oversee the management of the support functions provided to BHE by the City Corporation (HR, IT, Legal and commercial services), ensuring that the level of support provided is aligned with agreed SLAs and in the best interests of the charity. You will direct all charity operations in line with our Climate Action and Responsible Business Strategies.


Essential requirements:


•           Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant field, OR ability to demonstrate an equivalent level of skills knowledge and significant experience in a relevant role within the charity/not for-profit sector.

•           Extensive leadership experience at a strategic level within the charitable/ not for-profit sector.

•           Substantial experience of developing and implementing strategies in a large and complex organisation in order to meet strategic corporate objectives.

•           In depth understanding of the full range of internal operations and business functions such as HR, Finance, IT etc, and an ability to manage these effectively in an agile and paced environment


You must be able to demonstrate:


•           In-depth experience complex project management involving collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

•           Substantial experience of managing and motivating diverse, dispersed, multidisciplinary teams, and inspiring staff and holding them to account through performance management and supporting them to achieve agreed goals.

•           Political astuteness and awareness to know when and how to promote the work internally and externally.

•           Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively across teams and sectors to achieve positive outcomes.
