About ESOL learning at CARAS
ESOL classes are essential to the holistic service we offer. It is often the first thing young people and adults ask for when they meet us. Our aim is to welcome learners, support them whatever their level and provide a bridge to enrolling in ESOL at their local college. Volunteers deliver non-formal classes for young people to support their participation in mainstream education, while a paid ESOL Tutor provides accredited Pre-Entry or Entry 1 courses to help adults prepare for college. CARAS offers learners small groups with lots of help and a creative, participatory curriculum.
CARAS currently offers a timetable of eight ESOL classes a week over Zoom: two for women, two mixed-gender adult classes and four classes for young people aged 15 to 18. Half the classes are at Entry 1 level, with the others at Entry 2 and Entry 3. We're pleased that more than 80 learners have joined us online since lockdown began, however this represents a drop in attendance, with not everyone willing or able to access online services. The combination of online and face-to-face learning nonetheless offers an exciting opportunity to reach more people across a wider area.
About the role
The main purpose of the role will be to oversee the day-to-day running of online classes and the gradual reintroduction of face-to-face classes when it is safe to do so. This will involve identifying appropriate venues that are accessible and safe for learners, volunteers and staff. The ESOL Coordinator will also work with the Head of Learning to develop a new Virtual Learning Environment to enhance both face-to-face and online delivery.
You will be supported through regular line management and clinical supervision, working alongside colleagues from our welcoming and supportive youth and adult teams. There are opportunities to access relevant training for this role.
This full-time role (5 days / 35 hours per week) is offered as a one-year fixed-term contract.
- Building and managing a team of volunteer teachers to deliver non-formal ESOL classes, including recruitment and training;
- Ensuring high quality provision across ESOL classes (online and face to face);
- Overseeing the practicalities of resourcing on-site classes, taking a cautious approach to the safe implementation of government guidance on protective measures during the coronavirus outbreak;
- Liaising with other providers to ensure that the needs of learners of refugee background are being met;
- Ensuring that delivery includes a range of creative and participatory methods;
- Conducting intake and diagnostic assessment of new beneficiaries, managing a waiting list if required;
- Participating in referral, team and other meetings as required;
- Monitoring and evaluation;
- Grant reporting;
- Ensuring that all safeguarding concerns are reported to the safeguarding lead;
- Working collaboratively with other project coordinators on educational support.
All services are currently being delivered remotely, however this is subject to change. The successful candidate will need to be able to work in Tooting and the south London area.
Please note this role will involve some evening and weekend work.
- a recognised ESOL teaching qualification (minimum CELTA or CertTESOL, preferably PGCE with ESOL specialism or equivalent);
- experience of professional ESOL teaching and supporting others to teach;
- experience of managing others;
- a creative and participatory approach to learning;
- ability to communicate clearly with people from diverse backgrounds;
- ability to motivate and engage young people and adults, listening to others and working in a non-judgemental way that develops trust;
- friendly, warm and patient manner;
- reflective approach to professional practice;
- good organisation and administrative skills;
- good IT skills;
- a good understanding of safeguarding procedures.
- experience or knowledge of issues facing refugee and asylum-seeker groups;
- experience of working with adult or youth refugee and asylum-seeking groups;
- knowledge of one or more community languages (including but not limited to Arabic, Vietnamese, Somali, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi and Kurdish);
- experience of working in partnership with other organisations;
- knowledge of the Further Education sector;
- experience of working in community groups or the third sector;
- familiarity with common Data Management Systems (for recording purposes).
