Head of Adult Inclusion

  • £30000 plus pension contributions pro rata 
  • Part time (28 hours per week/ 4 days per week) 
  • One-year fixed-term contract 
  • Reports to Managing Director 

All services are currently being delivered remotely, however this is subject to change. The successful candidate will need to be able to work in Tooting and the south London area

About Adult Inclusion at CARAS 

CARAS offers holistic support to refugees and people seeking asylum.  

For many years, we have run groups to support asylum seeking and refugee women, developing a thriving community with people who otherwise experience isolation and exclusion from their new communities. Our local refugee community is made up of new arrivals and longer term residents, all of whom experience varying levels of disadvantage as a result of their forced migration experience, as well as systemic challenges that are built into life in London. We have historically worked with a very local group, paying close attention to gendered experiences of migration. There is potential for significant change here due to the shift from face to face to online working, to changing local demographics which now mean that many more new arrivals are in our locality, and changes to the employment prospects of refugees meaning that we anticipate working with many more men than we ever have previously.  

Since lockdown, our methods of engagement and the needs of our beneficiary group has changed dramatically. We are seeking a creative, motivated worker who has ideas for how to rebuild a thriving service that will welcome a wide range of refugees and asylum seekers, supporting them to access services online and, where possible, running new face-to-face groups.  

This is an exciting and challenging time. Our old methods of engagement and delivery are no longer possible and so we are looking to embrace new ways of working. The successful candidate will need to be tenacious, have excellent relationship building skills, and be able to lead, motivate and support a team, all working together to achieve excellent outcomes for the adults who come to CARAS. They will need to have problem solving skills- we anticipate that this will be a time of flux, where new ideas need to be tested and not everything will succeed. However, we have confidence that there is a great deal of work that can be done to help refugees and people seeking asylum to develop their skills in English, have access to employability training, be confident in use of IT, and have options to participate in sports, leisure and other activities that contribute to positive wellbeing and mental health.

CARAS offers 28 days’ annual leave per year. CARAS also pays into a workplace pension with employers’ contributions currently at 4%. We are a proud member of the Living Wage Foundation, ensuring that all employees at every level are remunerated fairly. 

All front-line staff are offered monthly clinical supervision with a qualified and experienced psychologist, allowing for exploration within a confidential space of challenges that arise, and for mitigation of vicarious harm. 

About the role 

The main purpose of the role will be to oversee the day-to-day running of our work with adults, focusing on online delivery and ways to increase digital access, and also planning for the gradual reintroduction of face-to-face provision when it is safe to do so.  

You will be supported through regular line management and clinical supervision, working alongside colleagues from our welcoming and supportive youth and adult teams. There are opportunities to access relevant training and support for this role. 

Main activities 

  • create and implement an outreach and engagement strategy to reach new beneficiaries 

  • manage new intakes and build relationships with new service users, conducting intake and diagnostic assessment of new beneficiaries, managing a waiting list if required; 

  • ensure that all adults within CARAS are signposted to the best support to meet their needs, within CARAS and in partnership with other organisations 

  • develop a blended delivery programme that combines online activities and face to face delivery 

  • think holistically about people’s needs, designing services that promote learning, skills, health and wellbeing 

  • work within a small team, drawing on the expertise of other specialists in CARAS 

  • lead on partnership development 

  • recruit, manage and support a small volunteer team who will support you to deliver services 

  • potentially take on the management of a second staff member 

  • ensure high quality provision across Adult Services (face to face and online); 

  • oversee the practicalities of resourcing on-site sessions, taking a cautious approach to the safe implementation of government guidance on protective measures during the coronavirus outbreak; 

  • liaise with other providers to ensure that the needs of refugees and asylum seekers are being met; 

  • ensure that delivery includes a range of creative and participatory methods; 

  • participate in referral, team and other meetings as required; 

  • monitoring and evaluation, and grant reporting 

  • ensure that all safeguarding concerns are reported to the safeguarding lead; 

  • work collaboratively with other project coordinators on educational support. 

Person specification  

Essential criteria: 

  • at least 2 years experience of managing others, being a team leader or similar 

  • experience of working with migrants and/or refugees, or lived experience 

  • deep knowledge of issues facing refugee and asylum-seeker groups, including an understanding of possible mental health outcomes 

  • strategic vision and planning skills 

  • a creative and participatory approach to learning 

  • ability to communicate clearly with people from diverse backgrounds 

  • ability to motivate and engage young people and adults, listening to others and working in a non-judgemental way that develops trust 

  • friendly, warm and patient manner 

  • reflective approach to professional practice 

  • good organisation and administrative skills 

  • good budgeting skills, including experience of managing complex funding streams 

  • good IT skills 

  • a thoughtful and empathetic approach to working with migrant groups 

  • a good understanding of safeguarding procedures 

 

Desirable criteria: 

  • experience of working with adult or youth refugee and asylum-seeking groups 

  • experience of working with women in vulnerable situations 

  • understanding of gendered experiences of forced migration 

  • knowledge of one or more community languages (including but not limited to Arabic,  Somali, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi and Kurdish) 

  • experience of working in partnership with other organisations 

  • knowledge of the Further Education sector 

  • experience of working in community groups or the third sector 

  • familiarity with common Data Management Systems (for recording purposes).
