Job description

1.  Trustee – safeguarding lead

CBRL is looking for an individual to advise the charity in ensuring its safeguarding responsibilities are met. Working as a member of the board of trustees, you will:   

  • Champion CBRL’s endeavors to ensure compliance and good practice within safeguarding matters 
  • Liaise with staff and others on matters relating to the charity’s safeguarding duties in advance of board meetings to ensure the board receives timely, accurate and relevant information to support their discussions and decision making  
  • Check CBRL’s risk register reflects safeguarding risks properly and plans sensible measures to take, including relevant insurance for trustee liability. 

Person specification: Essential (E) and Desirable (D)   

  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding as it relates to an international organisation (E)  
  • Knowledge of relevant safeguarding legislation and best practice (E) 
  • Personal experience of handling safeguarding within an organisational context (E) 
  • Experience of promoting and generating a culture of safeguarding within an organisation (E) 

2.  Trustee – with legal expertise

CBRL seeks a trustee, preferably with expertise in charity law, to work as a member of the board of trustees to:  

  • help to ensure that the charity complies with various legislative and regulatory requirements and acts properly according to its governing document.    
  • advise the charity on compliance  
  • advise the charity on any legal agreements into which it may enter 
  • advise on CBRL’s plans to modernise its constitution. 

Person specification: Essential (E) and Desirable (D) 

  • Legal qualification, e.g. Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or post graduate qualification (E) 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and explain legal issues to trustees and other stakeholders (E) 
  • Familiarity with legal issues around charitable philanthropic fundraising (D)
  • Familiarity with the fundraising research environment/legal issues around research grants (D)
