Job description

Cumberland Lodge was founded in 1947, in the aftermath of the Second World War, to make a valuable difference in the world. In that time, we have accumulated an extraordinary archive of documents, which record our story, development and impact.

This is an exciting time to join Cumberland Lodge. We have recently relocated part of our archive and have ambitions to make our resources more accessible. In this role, you will review and catalogue our archive, ensuring that important documents are more systematically ordered. Working with the Programme team, you will have the opportunity to curate archive displays relevant to specific groups or events at Cumberland Lodge.

What’s involved?

  • Working with the Cumberland Lodge team, conduct a review of current archive material and assess what needs to be kept.
  • Arrange, organise and catalogue the archive to make it easily accessible to staff and researchers.
  • Maintain an accurate catalogue of archive material, including brief condition reports.
  • Working with the Programme team, look ahead to future events and prepare relevant archive displays for the benefit of visiting scholars or members of the public.
  • Research past visitors’ books and compile a record of visits to Cumberland Lodge by interesting or influential people.
  • As requested by the Chief Executive, when on-site at Cumberland Lodge, assist with archive queries from scholars, alumni or members of the public.
  • Increase external awareness by contributing short articles of interest to the Friends’ quarterly magazine.

This role will suit people who… have strong organisational and administrative skills and a genuine interest in history, research or archives. Experience in cataloguing, along with strong IT skills (including sound knowledge of databases), will be desirable for this role.

If you’re looking to develop your career in this field, or willing to learn new skills, we are keen to hear from you!

Time commitment: As often as you like (with prior arrangement with the Volunteer Manager or the Meeting & Events team), but at least once a month.

Training and support: In-house induction and training will be provided, and you will receive ongoing support from your Volunteer Manager, as required.

Due to the specialist nature of this role, it is expected that applicants will already have basic skills in this field.

Practical information

Cumberland Lodge is situated at the heart of Windsor Great Park, about five miles from Windsor town centre. Due to extremely limited public transport links, own transport is essential. Regrettably, Cumberland Lodge is not in a position to reimburse travel expenses.
