Based in: London (N1), UK (currently remote working due to C19 – as and when DMI returns to office working the successful candidate will need to be able to attend the office in person)
Salary: £90,000 per annum, plus 5% pension contribution and private health insurance

Development Media International (DMI) creates evidence-based behaviour change campaigns to improve health and save lives. We deliver at scale to maximise impact and cost-effectiveness. We are the first organisation to scientifically demonstrate that mass media can increase life-saving behaviours. In 2018 DMI published the results of its 5-year, £7m randomised controlled trial (RCT) in West Africa which showed that 56% more children were taken for treatment for malaria, 73% more for diarrhoea and 39% more for pneumonia following exposure to our campaign. Modelling indicates that over 3000 lives were saved during the campaign and that our approach is one of the most cost-effective ways of saving children’s lives. We have subsequently undertaken a second RCT which showed that the modern contraceptive prevalence rate was 20% higher in areas exposed to DMI’s messaging compared to areas that were not.
DMI has two priorities: first, to continue to generate ground-breaking research, second, to take our proven strategies to scale, saving as many lives as possible and improving health. We work across a range of health issues, including child survival, reproductive health, nutrition, hygiene, and early childhood development. DMI works in close partnership with leading experts in health, including WHO, UNICEF and LSHTM and has been funded by some of the world’s most prestigious organisations including the Wellcome Trust, DFID, Comic Relief, the Global Innovation Fund, Unorthodox Philanthropy and the Mulago Foundation.

DMI is looking for an exceptional individual to be our Director of Business Development and part of our senior management team. Your primary responsibility will be to secure funding for new DMI projects, which you will help to design. We have enjoyed significant fundraising success over recent years, securing more than £20m in new funding since 2017. This has enabled DMI to expand rapidly, both geographically and in terms of the themes of our campaigns. To continue this trend, we are aiming to raise an additional £15m by the end of 2022. This funding will allow us to consolidate our project portfolio in existing countries of operation and allow us to expand our work in West Africa. You will also have responsibility for overseeing DMI’s external communications, developing and maintaining relationships with prospective partners and donors, and representing DMI within the international development community.
More specifically, the Director of Business Development role will include the following responsibilities:
- Securing significant long-term funding for DMI, through a combination of follow-on funding from existing donors and new income. Over 2021-2022, DMI’s fundraising target is to raise an additional £15m
- Overseeing, and contributing to, the process of proposal preparation. This will include identifying opportunities, developing, writing, and submitting proposals. These may be unsolicited proposals, or they may be responses to tender opportunities offered by institutional donors such as USAID or FCDO
- Contributing to the design of projects, bringing together staff, resources and DMI’s operating methods in a form that represents the most cost-effective approach to a given problem
- Maintaining and developing strong relationships with prospective donors and potential partners (NGOs and other organisations) in advance of funding opportunities
- Representing DMI within the international development community, including with key donors, clients, partners, and others as required
- Keeping aware of international development trends, particularly in the health and SBC sectors, and ensuring that the CEO, the Senior Management Team (of which you will be a part), and other key staff are updated on these trends
- Providing dynamic and inspirational management to the strategy and development team in the UK (currently 3 people), and liaising successfully with relevant staff in DMI’s country offices about business development opportunities
- Overseeing DMI’s external communications, ensuring that websites, annual reports, and other materials are on-brand, of the highest quality, and contribute to the achievement of DMI’s objectives
- Other tasks as required by DMI
The role will be offered on a permanent contract from the outset. However, for the first 16 months (which includes provision for sufficient hand over at each end) the successful candidate will act as maternity cover for DMI’s Director of Strategy and Development. At the end of this term, and subject to mutual agreement between you and DMI, there is potential for the successful candidate to join DMI on a permanent basis.
Required knowledge, skills and experience
- Demonstrable, and substantial, success at securing significant (commensurate with the £15m fundraising target) and resilient funding from a variety of sources such as trusts/foundations, corporate donors, high net worth individuals, and institutional funders
- Deep experience of proposal writing, and managing business development systems and processes, including developing and maintaining a funding pipeline. Experience of writing funding proposals for DFID and USAID would be highly desirable, but we will consider outstanding individuals whose primary experience is in the private sector
- Very strong intellectual ability, as evidenced by a good degree or similar qualifications and performance at interview. The scientific elements of DMI’s work are intellectually demanding; the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are capable of understanding, describing, and designing projects that have a scientific basis
- Substantial knowledge of the international development field. The ideal candidate will have worked directly for an NGO/implementing organisation or funding agency, but we will consider outstanding candidates from the private sector or consultancy fields who can demonstrate a familiarity with international development and its objectives
- Outstanding writing skills in English. The successful candidate must be able to communicate concisely, clearly, and with flair
- The ability to work in a team environment with technical and non-technical staff, based in the UK and overseas
- Self-motivated and dynamic, with a high capacity for work, and the ability to be flexible, resilient, and good humoured under pressure
- Permission to live and work in the UK
Desirable knowledge, skills and experience
- Experience of working in developing countries
- Language skills in French, Portuguese, Swahili, or other major African language
- Knowledge and experience working within the global health and/or media sectors
