BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND PURPOSE OF THE POST

The Finance and Resources Team is responsible for responsible for HI’s finances, general services and HR in the UK. It comprises the Chief Finance and Operating Officer, a Finance Officer and an Accounting Officer.

The main purpose of this post is:

• To ensure smooth and efficient running of the HI UK office, including office services, IT, internal communications and health & safety
• To act as a key point of contact within the organisation and externally
• To undertake human resources administration for staff and volunteers, including supporting recruitment and follow-up
• To provide administrative support to the Chief Executive, Leadership Team and Board of Trustees

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations

• Maintain the office facilities and environment to agreed service levels
• Act as primary point of contact with the landlord and all suppliers for the office space, proactively dealing with arising issues
• Be responsible for the operation and maintenance of office equipment and IT equipment for all staff and volunteers, and arrange their repair or replacement, in conjunction with the Finance Officer and the Accounting Officer, as need arises
• Act as principal contact person for HI UK’s IT infrastructure and support provider, helping colleagues to access IT support when required and developing and implementing the organisation’s IT strategy
• Manage budget lines associated with running of the office and participate in procurement, primarily of office and IT supplies, liaising with external suppliers.
• Act as designated Health & Safety Officer for the office, including ensuring Health & Safety policies are up to date and being adhered to
• Continually review systems in place within the office, make improvements where required, and communicate these to relevant people

Human Resources

• Provide administrative support and advice for the recruitment of staff, consultants and volunteers, including advertising, interviews, issue of contracts and inductions, liaising with the federation manager and recruitment teams when relevant
• Assist with other HR tasks, including managing staff and volunteer files, managing the HR information system, administrative support for payroll and contributing to updates of the staff handbook
• Support teams on volunteer recruitment, contracts, induction, support and training
• Maintain an up-to-date welcome kit for new starters and provide and coordinate induction training sessions

· Make sure that HR policies and internal processes are updated and well known by all the staff

• Provide support and advice to managers on HR matters, in collaboration with the Chief Finance and Operating Officer and the Chief Executive, including leave management, payroll, pension, changes in contracts or situation, flexible working and flexible hours, diversity and inclusion, potential conflict and interpretation of the Staff Handbook

Administrative support

• Provide administrative support to the Chief Executive, including diary management, preparing and servicing meetings and filing
• Organise and support meetings of the Board of Trustees, including room booking, diary management, preparation of papers, minute-taking and organising catering
• Maintain filing systems
• Deal with enquiries, calls and emails from the public, partners and other HI entities
• Support specific projects as needed

Other tasks

• Contribute to projects led by the Finance and Resources team and the HI UK whole team.

The role

You will:

• Provide expert support, guidance, and information on cerebral palsy particularly within the context of Scope’s Strategy, to disabled people, families, professionals, Scope colleagues and members of the public.

• Be Scope’s representative within the region on cerebral palsy, joining existing CP forums and groups, helping the CP community to come together, and sharing Scope’s work within communities.

About you

You will:

• Have an in-depth knowledge of cerebral palsy, its causes, health implications, therapies, and available support due to a personal lived experience.
• Have experience and up to date knowledge of current issues that affect disabled people and those around them, specifically people with cerebral palsy.
• Have at least two years’ experience working in a customer focused environment.
• Have excellent communication skills with an understanding of different needs and being able to respond to these accordingly.
• Have a strong ability to convey complex information in an accessible way and engage diverse audiences.
• Be an excellent communicator who demonstrates effective person-centred listening, empathy, and probing skills to respond to underlying issues and assist customers to make informed choices.
• Be highly organised with the capacity to prioritise workloads effectively by using your own initiative. Ability to engage groups of people and individuals on the subject of cerebral palsy and disability.
• Have direct experience of the barriers that society creates for disabled people. Bringing drive and enthusiasm to the role, demonstrating that you care passionately about improving the lives of disabled people.

· Experience raising income from a range of income streams particularly Trusts and Foundations also including skills in managing events, individual donors, legacy, corporate and community fundraising.

Camphill is a worldwide movement with over 100 independent charities (often referred to as 'communities') supporting individuals with additional support needs to lead meaningful lives and to reach their fullest potential. The organisation began here, in Scotland, in 1939 through a group of Austrian refugees. They sought societal change in the way disadvantaged and vulnerable people were treated and cared for. 

There are 11 Camphill charities in Scotland, from Aberdeen to Dumfries and Galloway, supporting over 500 people from early childhood through to older age. In Aberdeen, Camphill Estates owns the land occupied by 6 of them. They are independent charities but work together under the Camphill Estates umbrella for the common good. 

Historically, Camphill Estates had one Fundraising Manager to generate voluntary raised funds and to support all of the communities to fundraise for themselves.  This all changed three years ago when this new post was created, representing a sea change in the organisation’s thinking. 

It followed a master plan which was drawn up with the help of consultants who reviewed the needs of the estate. This process produced a lengthy list of capital build projects for 5 of the 6 charities that are necessary to improve the buildings and the opportunities for the service users. The cost of delivering those projects was an estimated £15million with the focus on improvements to Camphill School and the residential units. 

A highly experience fundraiser was appointed to create and lead the capital campaign to raise the required £15m funding, within a ten-year period.  Three years on, the campaign has met with great success - £4.5m has been raised already.  They also built a very strong and focussed fundraising team of five, raised the profile of the campaign in the local area and built strong working relationships with all the five partner charities.

Sadly, the current capital appeal fundraiser is moving on from Camphill Estates to live overseas, and Camphill Estates are looking for a new senior fundraiser to lead the appeal and carry on the good work. In the three years since the appeal was launched, further capital requirements have emerged, and a new charity (Murtle Market) has been created.   The appeal total has therefore been reset at £15m and again, ten years has been set as the timescale.

The Board has set aside a healthy budget which allows the Director of Fundraising to build a team to deliver success.   It will be up to the Director to devise a strategy and manage the team of five fundraisers to reach the new income goal. 

Crucially, Board do not see this appeal as an end in itself.  Such a varied and evolving group of charities will always have a capital fundraising requirement and are therefore happy to offer this role as a permanent position, not linked to the current appeal target or length.

Main purpose of the role

Reporting to the Fundraising Manager, this post will lead on the development and delivery of Thrive’s community and public fundraising whilst working collaboratively with the rest of fundraising team to maximise and develop opportunities over various income streams.

 The post holder will work with our local centres to develop fundraising opportunities and offerings that are appealing to the local community.

The role will also focus on campaigns and projects which either bring in significant unrestricted income (e.g. The Big Give), or that help to step change Thrive’s ability to fundraise (e.g. Thrive’s supporter journey).

As part of the fundraising team the post holder will support and work collaboratively on key projects and activities related to tribute, corporate, individual and regular giving.

About the role

The Inclusive Climate Researcher is being recruited to support delivery on this growing portfolio of research and consultancy focussing on inclusive approaches to climate action, adaptation, mitigation and resilience. This work is closely aligned with GDI Hub’s work on inclusive cities and infrastructure, so an understanding of the intersection of climate, disability inclusion and accessibility in cities is important, and the post holder will likely work closely with inclusive design colleagues.

Initially, the role will primarily support a new project integrating disability inclusion in low carbon futures through research, training and technical assistance.

Role overview

This role will suit someone with research experience that is also looking to engage in practical work and drive impact.

The role will require knowledge of disability innovation and inclusive design in the context of climate change, including an appreciation of disability in the context of wider social inclusion and climate adaptation/mitigation. While the post holder will be able to work with subject matter experts, the ability to work across these diverse domains is essential. Good communication skills are vital as training and communicating knowledge to diverse audiences is a key part of this role.

The researcher will undertake research under the supervision and guidance of the project lead (GDI Hub’s Head of Research and Delivery). They will be responsible for research and analysis drawing on diverse research skills including policy review and strategy, desk reviews, qualitative, co-design and participatory methods, with the ability to extract key themes and provide actional insights.

Experience in and a passion for inclusive approaches to research with diverse user groups is key to this role. The researcher will be expected to be able to develop research protocols, instruments and methodologies to suit project needs, ranging from academic to consultancy-based research. Experience in academic research, including acquiring ethical approval, managing data and analysis and drafting quality academic papers would be an advantage. Communicating with diverse audiences through the preparation of presentations for clients and events, report and paper writing will be a large part of this role.

Translating knowledge into practice, technical assistance to climate projects, developing and supporting delivery of training on inclusive climate innovation, managing clients and networks of innovators and experts will form part of the role.

The researcher will support advocacy, communications and external engagement, promoting the work under their remit, including at key conferences and events, including UN climate events. They will also support the publication of papers aligned to the research and delivery to further increase the reach and impact of the work and seek to instil academic rigour as appropriate.

The role will be based within the Research and Delivery team and involve collaboration with Innovation and Academic colleagues.  The post holder will be expected to operate with reasonable autonomy, participate in client conversations, be collaborative and creative with a drive to make the world a fairer place, inspiring others to do the same.

Context of Job

AFK (Action For Kids) is a national charity helping young people with disabilities to develop their independence and find employment. Our vision is a world where all people living with a disability get to lead the life they choose.  As part of this we provide bespoke employment skills and organise work experience placements across North London.  At a national level, we provide mobility equipment not available on the NHS for disabled children and young people up to the age of 26.

Job Purpose

To support young people aged 18+ who have disabilities and/or are neurodiverse to gain employment. The role will be to primarily liaise with businesses and employers to broker new opportunities for supported and unsupported employment.  You will also work with a small caseload of young people, assessing their employability skills. You will work closely with the Employment & Skills team to place young people from the Employment Coaches caseloads into employment, as well as locate some voluntary roles and work placements. You will deliver one to one job coaching to enable young people to progress towards their own goals and objectives.

Working Conditions

The post is 35 hours a week, normally between 9.30am – 5.30pm. The post holder may be expected to work some evenings and weekends as required by the job. There is a TOIL policy. This role is peripatetic within London.

Principle Responsibilities

1. Engage with businesses and employers to source and secure employment opportunities for the young people AFK work with.
2. Encourage businesses and employers to offer volunteering, work tasters and work placements that may also lead to paid opportunities for young people.
3. Develop and maintain knowledge of the local labour market & opportunities relating to employment, work tasters, work placements and volunteering.
4. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with local employer groups, statutory, voluntary and private organisations to support the development of suitable opportunities.
5. Participate in employer visits with young people to engage them in the different workplace roles to further aid their choices in employment.
6. Provide training / advice to employers as required.
7. Provide employment support for the Employment & Skills team and produce monthly updates in line with AFKs key performance indicators (KPIs).
8. Work with 1 or 2 young people to identify and support their aspirations for future employment.
9. Identify any financial implications for individuals relating to full and part-time employment in connection with disability benefits.
10. Work closely with the Senior Employment Coach to match opportunities for young people from the caseloads of Employment Coaches.
11. Participate in regular 1-1 supervision with the Employment & Skills manager.
12. Support young people in the workplace if required.
13. Refer young people for specialist advice and support where appropriate.
14. Monitor the progress of individuals and keep appropriate records.
15. Provide timely reports and keep AFK recording systems up to date.
16. Undertake necessary administrative duties relating to the role.
17. Undertake learning & development as identified via appraisals and reviews.
18. Carry out other duties as deemed appropriate to the post by the Executive Director of Services and the Employment & Skills manager.

Summary of duties: 

Our Communications and Engagement Officer will lead on the work of our new Community Hub project and promote all the great things that CfD does e.g. the events and activities as part of our Deaf People Together project.  The post holder will be based at The Vassall Centre, Gill Avenue, Fishponds, Bristol BS16 2QQ. 

This is an exciting opportunity to help CfD improve our communications, and to support the Deaf Community and hard of hearing people throughout Bristol with managing and sharing their information.  You will work with Deaf and hard of hearing people by providing the training, tools, and resources to enable them to create their own information materials that can be shared with the community. 

You will be responsible for developing and uploading website content, creating marketing material, use of social media and other communications platforms to help deliver the aims of our Community Hub project and to increase our community engagement and profile.  You will also lead on commissioning a redesign of our website. 

You will also have a role in supporting our Community Development Officer to arrange and publicise events. 

You will use your time in this way: 

• Half of your time on the Community Hub Project; 

• About a day a week supporting our Community Development Officer; 

• The rest of your time on promoting other projects and developing the CfD website. 

This is a role for a creative individual who is well organised and is proactive, who has the ambition to develop and deliver fun, engaging, and effective accessible communication. 

The main responsibilities are to: 

Community Hub 

1. Provide training for and support deaf volunteers to improve CfD’s capacity to produce and share relevant community information from across Bristol. You will organise workshops for deaf people to develop their skills in video and media technology to produce accessible content. 

1. Develop a virtual information hub, where information on CfD events and other activities in Bristol will be fully accessible to all deaf people, using CfD’s website, social media, apps, and newsletters. 

1. Support deaf people with producing their own newsletters using BSL and subtitles. Our aim is to have a regular newsletter that is produced and managed by deaf people. 

1. Develop a CfD “newsround” – a regular video round-up of events, news, and information of interest to deaf people. 

1. Work with 4 Community Hubs in Bristol to increase their accessibility for and engagement with deaf people in their neighbourhoods, and to increase their understanding of how to include deaf people in activities. This work will include collaborating to deliver deaf-focused events. 

Communications 

1. Support other projects at CfD with information dissemination, and media and communications, such as creating posters, video production, posting on social media, and basic updates on our website.

1. Improve the quality and reach of information that CfD sends out e.g. using other social media platforms. 

1. Support the CFD Community Development Officer by arranging and promoting events. 

1. Ensure compliance across all media with CfD’s brand guidelines. 

1. Lead on reviewing the CfD website and commissioning a new design. 

1. Coordinate any media enquiries. 

1. Collect data to analyse and evaluate the impact of the role. 

General 

1. Attend conferences, training, and other staff development opportunities.  

1. Develop an agreed personal training plan and carry this out using internal and external training as required. 

1. Adhere to and promote CfD’s policies and standards, especially the Equal Opportunities, Data Protection, Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Communication policies. 

1. Act as an ambassador for CfD promoting a positive and professional image and attitude at all times. 

1. Support the CEO and other CfD staff in achieving the aims of CfD and carry out such other relevant duties as may be agreed. 

1. Support CfD to find funding for new projects involving Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. 

1. Coordinate and manage own Access to Work support (if needed). 

Terms and conditions: 

1. This is a full-time position of 37.5 hours a week. CfD’s core hours are 10am – 4pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. 

1. Contract until January 31st 2026 with possibility of an extension subject to further funding.

1. Salary £24,000 - £27,000a year.

The final interpretation of this job description rests with the CEO in consultation with the Board of Trustees and the jobholder. The job description will be reviewed in the course of supervision meetings and any amendments will be negotiated with the jobholder. The jobholder is also expected to share in other CfD activities as time permits and by agreement with the CEO. 

Person specification 

The successful candidate will have had at least two years in a relevant communications role. 

You will have a pro-active approach and be committed to achieving results 

Essential skills, abilities and knowledge 

• A passion to communicate CfD’s values and to support the interests of the deaf and hard of hearing people that we work with. 

• Excellent interpersonal skills and confidence in communicating with Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users and hard of hearing people. This may be direct communication or through a BSL interpreter or speech-to-text operator.

• Ability to create high-quality communications material and to engage with a variety of audiences. 

• Experience of social media management and familiarity with evolving and new digital media platforms. 

• Ability to create graphics and images for communication materials. 

• Ability to produce video material, including filming and editing and adding including subtitles.

• Ability to think creatively.

• Ability to write clear content for social media and website pages

• Experience of training and supporting groups of people, either as part of paid work or as a volunteer. 

• Ability to form positive working relationships with other professionals and to  collaborate on projects. 

• Good influencing and negotiating skills so that you can persuade people to make their activities more inclusive of deaf people. 

• Good attention to detail. 

• Educated to A-Level standard, including Maths and English GCSEs. 

• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and associated software, including Excel, Word, and Outlook. 

Desirable skills, abilities and knowledge: 

• Relevant professional qualification. 

• Experience of working with Deaf and/or hard of hearing people. 

• Ability to communicate in British Sign Language (training can be provided). 

• Experience working, paid or unpaid, in or with communities, the disability sector or in the third sector.
